F**k Off! 'Succession' Is Getting a Season 4

Succession is a show that could—probably—go on forever. It's about the powerful people, particularly the morally bankrupt Roy family, who run the media we consume every day from their ivory towers. The brilliance of Succession comes in its very roots; it's joking about things we all understand and relate to, and its characters, much like its spiritual predecessor Arrested Development, are hilarious, frequently in how utterly out of touch they can be. But it's also got a dramatic throughline, with happenings and cliffhangers we really cannot wait to see resolved. It's a good recipe. It works.
But nothing lasts forever, and something good definitely doesn't last forever. Brian Cox, who plays Succession's leading evil media mogul Logan Roy, said earlier this year that he only envisioned Succession continuing for 1 or 2 more seasons beyond the now-airing Season 3. “I would say possibly two more series [seasons] and then I think we’re done,” he told GQ UK. “It depends what the writers feel. I know they’ve got an endgame. They haven’t told us what the ending is, but there is an endgame. So it’s just how they get up to that endgame, whether it takes one series or two series.”
Now, granted, that's Cox saying that. As fantastic as he is in the show as Logan, he's not the one deciding when the show is going to end, continue, or what's going to happen. That's up to showrunner Jesse Armstrong and the rest of the Succession writing team. But I digress—we'll see what's going to happen in the rest of Succession Season 3 (as of now there are only two episodes left in the shortened 9-episode third season).
But we should at least have a bit of an idea about the future of the show.
Will there be a Season 4 of Succession?
There sure will be. HBO officially confirmed the show's return back on October 26, 2021, only a few weeks into the airing of Season 3.
“With each season of SUCCESSION, Jesse Armstrong has continued to surpass our wildest expectations, pulling us deeper into the Roy family’s inner sanctum with indelible wit, humanity, and precision,” Francesca Orsi, HBO's Executive Vice President of Programming said in a press release. “This season is undoubtedly no exception, and we couldn’t be more excited for all that’s in store in this next season ahead.”
So you don't have to be concerned—the show will, indeed, go on.
What will Season 4 of Succession be about?
The Season 3 finale of Succession not only served as a brilliant ending for what somehow may have been the show's strongest season yet, but also managed to plant numerous threads for storylines that will certainly pick up when Season 4 arrives.
First and foremost, we have Kendall, Roman, and Shiv Roy completely aligned for the first time in quite a while. After his near-death experience, Kendall—not doing well at all—opened up with his two siblings just as they all realized their father was once again trying to screw them over when it comes to business. The three also then concocted an—ultimately unsuccessful—plan to cast their father out of Waystar.
Season 4, then, will find Waystar in uncharted ground; Logan's deal to sell will (presumably) go through, with Roman and Shiv on shaky ground at best. You'd imagine Kendall will have little chance to have much to do with the company, but do remember that GoJo's Lukas Mattson (Alexander Skarsgård) was at his birthday party. They have a relationship.
Perhaps most interestingly, though, is the dynamic we'll see at play with Tom and Shiv. It wasn't explicitly spelled out, but the implication from the very end (based on Logan touching Tom's shoulder, Tom's talk to Greg about selling his soul, and that stunning final shot) is that Tom took the information that Shiv gave him and brought it to Logan. Tom mentioned to Kendall three episodes prior that he started to see the dynamic of how things worked within that family; Kendall always seemed to take the L's, while Logan always won (as he's always too eager to tell his kids). Tom, after being particularly walked on by Shiv all season, seemingly made a power move.
Who will be in the cast?
It's reasonable to expect that all of our main players return. That means Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Matthew McFadyen, Sarah Snook, Nicholas Braun, Alan Ruck, J. Smith Cameron, Peter Friedman, David Rasche, Justine Lupe, and the rest of the show's extensive cast can all reasonably be expected to play a part.
Based on how everything wound up playing out, we'd certainly expect Alexander Skarsgård to return as GoJo's Lukas Mattson, likely in a much-increased role. That should be a fascinating wrinkle to add, as he's a tremendous actor and the character is already a true wildcard.
