From ELLE

You’ve got the cat eye, the fishtail, the negative space one, and the Cleopatra, which are all original liner looks in their own merit, but can get a bit...boring. (There, we said it!)

Scroll through Instagram and you’ll see influencers to celebrities alike, moving away from the lash line toward new experimental frontiers with eyeliner.

Just last week at Paris Fashion Week, Gigi Hadid and makeup artist Patrick Ta moved the liner from the bottom of the lid to the top, called the floating crease liner look.

Hadid's white lines were unique in that the perfectly straight white liner sat just above her eyelid crease and paired perfectly with her flawless skin, fluffy brows, and glossy lips. Think Blade Runner for the minimalist.

And Hadid isn’t alone. The trend has taken over Instagram, with everyone from beauty influencers to MUAs embracing the freehand draw.

"I love this trend because it’s showing that eyeliner can be used anywhere on the eye creating all different shapes and in different colors," explains Patrick Ta, the celebrity makeup artist behind Hadid’s recent look. “As makeup is evolving, more artists are trying out new things including graphic liner. You can create a dramatic graphic liner or you can create a look as simple as a line across the lid like I did with Gigi."

If you’re interested in stepping outside the line, Ta broke down how he achieved the look on Hadid. For the lines, Ta used Maybelline's Tattoostudio Sharpenable Gel Pencil Longwear Eyeliner in Polished White. "Some tips I have during this application is to have a steady and precise hand," he explains. "You want to look at the person while their eyes are open to see where the best placement would be for the white liner. It also helps to have a small precise brush that creates perfect strokes."
