Alright everyone, gird your loins! The Met Gala has arrived!

It's the first Monday in May and that means it's time for the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute benefit or the Met Gala as it's more commonly known. The event, which raises money for the museum's Costume Institute, doubles as both the opening of their yearly special exhibit as well as the most prestigious social event of the year. The invite-only event is attended by the highest echelon of A-list celebrities and the who's who of fashion, each hand selected by Vogue's longtime editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

Each year the theme of the Met Gala corresponds with the Costume Institute's spring exhibit, with this year's being an homage to Karl Lagerfeld, the late fashion impresario who headed Chanel, Fendi, and Lagerfeld. "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty" opens to the public on May 5, but the Met Gala guests will get a sneak peak, as they dress in honor of the German designer. This year's theme is less costume-y than some in the past have been (such as the "Camp" or "Heavenly Bodies" years), but Lagerfeld's signature style, high-necked collars, and love of cats are certain to creep into the fashion choices of the rich and famous.

Each year, Wintour selects a handful of official co-chairs who co-host the evening. This year's are co-chairs are Oscar-winning actor Penélope Cruz (who has been a longtime Chanel ambassador), tennis superstar Roger Federer, international pop star Dua Lipa, and I May Destroy You creator Michaela Coel. Both Coel and Lipa appeared on the cover of Vogue last year.

The choice to honor Lagerfeld has been a controversial one given his disdain for political correctness, so subtle jabs or political statements will certainly be seen on the red carpet.
