This Glamorous Spin on the Glitter Cat-Eye Is a New Party Scene-Stealer

Inspired by the ’60s, designer Michael Halpern served up gilded eye glamour at London Fashion Week.

As New York transplant Michael Halpern continues to infiltrate the ranks of British high fashion, the 29-year-old designer is finding firm footing in glittering eveningwear that channels a decadent retro spirit. This season, the 29-year-old Central Saint Martins alum was inspired by portraits of his Bronx-bred grandmother, honing in on the glamour of her golden era: the equal parts splashy, liberating, and swinging decade that was the ’60s.

In true Halpern fashion, there were rich jewel tones, micromini silhouettes, and sparking sequins galore. But his head-to-toe statements weren’t complete without a gilded negative-space cat-eye at the hands of makeup artist Isamaya Ffrench.

Tracing bold black liner underneath the brow bone and outwards into a feline flick with laser-like precision, she then filled in the empty space with an abundance of heavy glitter in a spectrum of shades from 24-karat metallic to peridot-green.

Recalling both the graphic kohl eye etchings of Ancient Egypt and the embellished cut-crease gazes of the Swinging ’60s all at once, the hybrid winged designs gave the clothes a run for their money. No small feat when there are mesmerizing gold foil minidresses with floor-grazing trains and dizzying mixed-media print jumpsuits at play. But with Halpern, the beauty is always in the 360-degree chromatic chaos.
