'Extended Family' Is Going to Be Your New Favorite Sitcom

Extended Family is set to join NBC's Tuesday-night lineup this fall, marking Jon Cryer’s return to the sitcom world after 12 seasons on CBS’s Two and a Half Men. Here is everything we know so far about the upcoming series.

What is Extended Family about?

Extended Family is a sitcom for the modern-day blended family—with a twist. It centers around amicably divorced couple Jim and Julia, played by Jon Cryer and Abigail Spencer, respectively. Following their split, the exes decide to continue to raise their kids at their family home, with each parent taking turns living with them. Things get more complicated when the owner of Jim’s favorite sports team, Trey (Donald Faison), starts dating Julia.

What is the release date for Extended Family?

NBC has not announced a release date for the premiere of Extended Family yet. However, the series is expected to premiere in the fall of 2023. It will air on Tuesday nights at 8:30 p.m. ET on NBC.

Who is the creator of Extended Family?

Extended Family was developed by Eddie Gorodetsky and Mike O’Malley. Gorodetsky worked as one of Chuck Lorre’s closest associates for around 20 years, on Dharma & Greg and Two and a Half Men. O’Malley, who is known for his acting work on shows like Glee and Yes, Dear, has written and produced for Showtime's Shameless and was recently the showrunner on Starz’s Heels, on which he plays Charlie Gully. He's now credited as the writer and executive producer of Extended Family.

Other executive producers on the show include Tom Werner, Wyc Grousbeck, Emilia Fazzalari and George Geyer.

Who is cast in Extended Family?

Extended Family already has a cast stacked with industry vets:

Jon Cryer as Jim

Cryer played Alan Harper on Two and a Half Men from 2003 to 2015. He's since appeared in NCIS, The Ranch, The Flash and Arrow. But Extended Family marks his return to TV as a leading man (albeit in an ensemble cast). Of course, no blurb about Cryer is complete without a reminder that he played Duckie in Pretty in Pink.

Abigail Spencer as Julia

Spencer is known for playing Suzanne Farrell, one of Don Draper's love interests, in Mad Men. You might also recognize her for her recurring role as Megan Hunt (Owen's sister) on Grey's Anatomy.

Donald Faison as Trey

Faison made his mark on TV as Dr. Christopher Turk on Scrubs. He made his mark on an entire generation as Murray in Clueless.

The kids on Extended Family are played by Sofia Capanna (Grace), a newcomer to the industry, and Finn Sweeney (Jimmy Jr.), who is pretty green himself but has three solid credits to his name: Barry, Platonic and American Crime Story.

Surely we can expect other comedy actors to drop in as recurring or guest stars as the series unfolds. Perhaps Faison's BFF Zach Braff? Fingers crossed!

How will the writers strike affect Extended Family?

It's hard to say at this point how the writers strike will affect Extended Family, as it depends in part on how long the WGA strike lasts. If it goes on for a long period of time, it's likely that the premiere of several series, including Extended Family, will be delayed. Production on several series began earlier than normal this past spring in anticipation of the strike, but it's not yet known if Extended Family was one of them.

Is there a trailer for Extended Family?

Not yet. NBC will likely release a trailer for Extended Family closer to the series’ premiere date, which is currently set for fall 2023.

How to watch Extended Family

Episodes of Extended Family are expected to start airing this fall on Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. ET on NBC. They will drop the following day on NBC’s streaming service Peacock.
