Exploring Senior Fair at the La Crosse County Library

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – As people age, it may be harder for some to find activities to keep active or resources that can help them. First News at Nine’s Dashal Mentzel shares how one event brought organizations across the Coulee Region together to help senior citizens.

The La Crosse County Library is hosting its 5th annual Senior Fair. The fair is a finale to the library’s Senior Moments Spring Program, which provides weekly activities to senior citizens. The fair provides senior citizens with multiple booths that have resources and opportunities. Onalaska Public Library Branch Manager, Sherri Sinniger, explains, “We’re looking at health and fitness. We also have answers for questions like hospice and senior care. The Loggers are going to be here, so we have something for everybody to take a look at here at the senior fair.”

Sinniger has been running a spring series of programs for seniors over the last few weeks. She says today’s (5/15/24) event helps local seniors see all of the programs and resources that are available, “I think seniors need to be aware of the different opportunities, not only for their physical and mental well-being but also for their recreational well-being.”

Kathy Radomski and her father, Ed, have visited the fair for multiple years and say they always enjoy returning to see what resources can help them. “I think it’s wonderful. It’s wonderful because it gives us information that we might not get otherwise. This helps us. ADRC is here, and we’ve used ADRC with my mom who had dementia.”

ADRC provides health services and counseling to senior citizens. Gundersen Clinical Stroke Coordinator, Rebekah Zinnecker, says there are multiple reasons why it’s important for senior citizens to have resources and programs, “Mentally, keeping them out and about with people. Physically keeping them active, to prevent things such as a stroke. And just connecting with people. For some people, it’s very lonely. They don’t have a lot of family around. So, it’s a good way to utilize these resources to connect them with people and to keep them out and about in the community.”

Sinniger says a total of 30 local organizations showed up in support for the event. In La Crosse, Dashal Mentzel First News at Nine.
