360 p6 Smart Bed

If you're searching for a smart mattress equipped with sleep-tracking capabilities and the power to customize the firmness of each side of the bed, Sleep Number has you covered. In our evaluations, the brand's p6 smart mattress was a popular top performer — and ideal for couples, especially those who have different sleep positions, body types or firmness preferences. The brand's mattresses feature built-in, adjustable air chambers for customizable comfort, along with biometric sensors, so the bed can automatically adapt to movement to keep you at your preferred firmness all night long.

The accompanying app allows for optional sleep tracking, meaning it'll share how long you've slept restfully, plus how long it takes you to fall asleep, along with guidance for those who want to actively improve their sleep quality. The caveat is that Sleep Number mattresses need to be paired with a matching bed base, but the brand offers a variety to choose from, including adjustable bases with head-raising capabilities and under-bed lighting for late-night trips to the bathroom, or even foot warming if you choose a more advanced model.

What it's made of: Five inches of memory foam for added pressure relief, adjustable air chambers for firmness control and biometric sensors for detecting movement to maintain the level of desired firmness.

Tester notes: Smart mattresses aren't cheap, and Sleep Number is no exception. While it's definitely a splurge, users consistently tell us the bed was worth the investment. More than 300 panelists and consumer testers gave the brand high praise, with this model earning top scores for overall comfort, support and sleep quality. Testers and users alike raved about the customizable firmness, with one user commenting, "There is no comparison,” while others called it a game changer for their overall health and well-being.

Solaire Adjustable Firmness Mattress

Saatva is a favorite brand among our panelists and product experts for its high-quality mattresses (the brand's Classic Mattress is even our best mattress), free white-glove delivery and top-notch customer service. The Solaire is adjustable and features more than 50 different firmness levels, thanks to its built-in air chambers and convenient remote. The mattress also has components such as a cotton pillow top, memory foam and latex, so you can experience the familiar comfort and support you'd expect from a more traditional mattress with the flexibility of customizable firmness.

While it may seem just as expensive as any other smart mattress, our analysts like that it can be used on just about any type of existing bed base, and the brand offers a generous year-long trial, so you have ample time to try it out risk-free.

What it's made of: A three-inch quilted cotton pillow top, one inch of latex with zoned support for targeted pressure relief, two inches of gel-infused memory foam, a moisture barrier and vulcanized air chambers with a reinforced enclosed base.

Tester notes: Users said they loved the flexibility of being able to adjust each side of the bed to their preferences for sleeping or lounging. The model's quality materials and thoughtful construction impressed experts and panel members alike, with several calling the bed "well made" and one telling us, "This is the best mattress I have ever owned."

Pod 3 Mattress

For hot sleepers, finding a comfortable cooling mattress can feel like a nightmare. Luckily, this contender from Eight Sleep allows you to choose your preferred temperature for each side of the bed through a convenient smartphone app. Whether you're in need of a cooler sleep or a warmer bed, the active grid in the mattress's cover connects to a hub next to your bed to control the overall temperature, with options ranging from 55º F to 110º F. The biometric sensors embedded in the grid track your sleep, providing insights on your overall sleep quality and more via the app. The mattress itself comes with five layers of foam for a balance of comfort and support, and if you have trouble waking up, the Eight Sleep has an alarm feature that vibrates and changes the temperature to help get you out of bed.

What it's made of: Five layers of foam, ranging from supportive foam on the bottom to comfort foam on the top, with an active grid layer featuring undetectable sensing technology embedded in the top layer and a stand-alone hub (i.e., a unit next to your bed) with water for powering the heating and cooling of the mattress.

Tester notes: In our evaluations, the brand's temperature-control features lived up to their claims. One of our product experts noted that while she's typically a hot sleeper, she "didn't wake up sweaty once throughout the night" and commented that being able to decide how warm or cold you want your bed to feel when climbing into it is a game changer. Another user told us, "The temperature control makes a huge difference in my comfort level."

Our analysts were also impressed by the combination of high-tech and cooling features of the mattress compared with others on the market. The downside is that some users mentioned the mattress felt a bit softer than they expected and didn’t have great edge support, but you can purchase just the cover and use it on a different 10- or 11-inch mattress.

Tempur-Ergo Smart Base

For a bed base with smart features, the Tempur-Ergo Smart Base is our top choice. Not only does it offer all the key perks of an adjustable bed base, but it also comes with high-tech capabilities, courtesy of the accompanying app. The base itself has both preprogrammed positions and the flexibility to customize your own. Plus, it features a vibrating massage mode with three intensities and an anti-snore mode, meaning the bed will vibrate or automatically raise the headboard, moving your upper body into an inclined position to relieve pressure on your airway. With the app, you can connect the bed to your voice assistant, track your sleep quality over time, and easily check the temperature, humidity and air quality of the room.

What it's made of: An adjustable base with adjustable legs for a final height ranging from four inches to 16 inches in three-inch increments, four USB ports (two on each side of the bed), under-bed lighting and two massage zones (one at the head and one at the foot of the bed), with an accompanying app and remote. The brand also reports that the base is compatible with most bed frames, meaning you can slide it inside your existing one for a more polished look.

Tester notes: This base blew away both our testers and analysts with its impressive features and well-thought-out design. One tester raved about the convenience of the under-bed lighting, calling it "perfect for when you wake up in the middle of the night and have to go to the bathroom." Testers also appreciated the anti-snore mode, specifically highlighting the ability to choose between raising the head of the bed to help alleviate additional pressure on the airway or opting for a vibrating pulse if the base detects snoring.

In our evaluations, the brand's smart features stood out compared with other adjustable beds we've tested and particularly impressed our analysts with their ability to measure complex aspects of a room, such as its humidity and air quality, with a quick click of a button. Just note that one of our testers found that the sleep-quality tracker wasn't the most representative during her first few months of using it, so it may take more time to accurately reflect your sleeping patterns.

How we evaluate the best smart beds and smart mattresses

The Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab evaluates various types of mattresses by researching popular models online, working with consumer testers to try each out at home for feedback on setup and sleep testing, and surveying long-term users on our tester panel for in-depth feedback to analyze. In the past two years alone, our analysts have examined more than 170,000 data points, collected from recent surveys of over 10,000 mattress owners. Every year, our analysts research each aspect of a mattress, considering the materials and specifications, in addition to standout features or claims from brands. Here are some factors we look at and consider to determine the best smart mattresses:

✔️ Ordering and delivery: We ask panelists to rate how easy the mattress was to order, whether online or in-store, and how quickly it arrived. They also have the option to share any potential problems that occurred during this process and if those issues were resolved.

✔️ Setup: Users give their opinions on the setup process, whether at-home setup or white-glove delivery, including how long it took their mattress to take proper shape once unwrapped.

✔️ Adjustability/firmness level: Users share their experiences with adjusting the firmness or position of the bed for adjustable smart mattresses and bed bases. For smart mattresses without the option of adjustable firmness levels, users rate the mattress on its firmness, and our analysts compare this information to the brand's claims.

✔️ Edge support: Reviewers tell us how the edges of the mattress perform under their weight or other pressure.

✔️ Comfort and support: Users score the mattress on overall comfort, support and how well they personally liked sleeping on them, both initially and over an extended period. They also share qualitative feedback on how well the bed has held up over time.

✔️ Temperature regulation: We ask all users, including hot sleepers and those who suffer from night sweats, to comment on how comfortable their body temperature remained while sleeping on the mattress.

✔️ Sleep-tracking insights: Testers share whether they felt the sleep tracking provided by the smart bed was accurate, helpful and relayed data well immediately and over time.

✔️ Sleep quality: Users note whether the mattress impacted their sleep quality and if they woke up feeling more or less sore over time. Our respondents then give the mattress an overall satisfaction score and compare it with any previous beds they've slept on.

✔️ Additional feedback: Panelists and users have the opportunity to share any specific likes, dislikes and additional comments concerning their user experience, from setup to long-term use.

Things to keep in mind when shopping for smart beds and smart mattresses

Choosing the best smart bed or smart mattress can feel daunting, especially when every option online seems to offer the same features in different packaging. Here are some things to think about to help narrow down what's most important to you for your next smart bed purchase:

✔️ Your budget: Smart beds are expensive. If you're looking to invest in an entirely new bed, you may benefit from a full sleep system that has both a smart mattress and an adjustable or smart base. If you're just looking to customize your comfort level, you may be better off buying a smart mattress that can adjust its temperature or firmness or an adjustable smart base that can provide sleep tracking.

✔️ Adjustable firmness levels: Being able to adjust the firmness of your bed is a game changer, especially for couples who disagree on firmness levels, since now they can each control their half of the smart mattress. However, if you and your sleeping partner don't have those issues and haven't had problems with finding your best firmness level, it might not be as important of a feature.

✔️ Temperature: If you're a hot sleeper, cooling mattresses can feel more like a necessity than a luxury. While some smart mattresses offer unique temperature control, it can cost extra, so think about whether being able to adjust your sleeping temperature is important to you. For comfort, some smart mattresses contain memory foam, which tends to retain heat, so those who overheat at night should opt for a bed with cooling technology, such as copper particles, gel or phase change material (PCM), infused in the foam.

✔️ Sleep tracking: Being able to track your sleep for insights on how to improve your sleep quality seems essential to the very concept of a smart mattress. If you're interested in learning more about your sleep stages, take note of what's offered by a mattress.

✔️ Smart home compatibility: Not every smart mattress or smart base will be compatible with a voice assistant, such as Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. If full integration with your smart home is important to you, check to see if the bed is compatible with your desired smart home device.

✔️ Remote vs. app control: Most smart beds have some sort of remote control, whether physical or accessible via smartphone app. Some users may prefer having one option over the other — or both for easy accessibility. Consider which method you would prefer using more frequently or which you would prefer if you need to alter the firmness at night.

Are smart beds worth it?

If you're after constant personalized, customizable control over aspects like the firmness or temperature of your mattress, it's worth considering investing in a smart mattress, especially if you're looking to actively improve your sleep health. It's ultimately a matter of personal preference, but many users on our survey panel swear by their adjustable smart beds. Just keep in mind that they don't come cheap: Most smart mattresses are well over $3,000 for a queen-size bed.

If you're set on buying a smart mattress but want to save money, try waiting for a holiday weekend like Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day or Thanksgiving (i.e., Black Friday and Cyber Monday). Individual mattress sites will offer discounts throughout the year, but these specific holidays are often your best bets for competitive offers across different brands.
