If you’re looking for a natural and effective way to stimulate growth at your hairline, rosemary oil or lotion may be the answer. This TikTok-trendy method of using the oil on the scalp as a hairline treatment for thinning hair and hair loss has been getting a lot of attention lately, and for good reason.

In addition, experts tell us that taking two kinds of supplements can also speed up the hair growth process: biotin and pumpkin seed oil. Ultimately, using an oil and a supplement simultaneously is an easy, simple and affordable strategy for stimulating hair growth, hair health aficionados note.

2 Best Hairline Growth Treatments: Rosemary Oil & Supplementation

We spoke to hair stylists and other haircare experts to learn more about how this remedy works, why it is so effective for your scalp health, and what tips they have for anyone wanting to use it. We also asked for more insight when it comes to biotin and pumpkin seed oil as supplements to take while giving rosemary oil a go.

Read on for advice and suggestions from Meerika Khanna, cosmetic formulator and founder of Rthvi, a brand focused on Ayurvedic hair wellness, and Ghanima Abdullah, hair expert and cosmetologist at The Right Hairstyles.

First Off, How Does Rosemary Oil Work?

Rosemary oil is the “number one ingredient to look for in a hair serum for hair growth,” Khanna says, adding that you may also “find it in other forms like rosemary water, rosemary leaf extract, and rosemary essential oil in a serum.” Rosemary, she explains, contains carsonic acid, which promotes hair growth due to its ability to help nerve growth and improve scalp circulation.

“As a cosmetic formulator, I have found rosemary oil‘s performance and efficacy closest to minoxidil,” she notes, comparing it to the common hair growth solution. “It’s a great ingredient if you want to avoid chemical-based hair growth products or if your scalp is sensitive to minoxidil,” she points out.

Abdullah agrees, and says that rosemary oil works “against the hair loss hormone, DHT.” The hairline and crown are common areas of thinning for women with hair loss related to age. “This is why it seems to work better in those areas,” she continues.

How To Use It

As seen in plenty of TikTok videos, rosemary oil is "gentle enough to use for the hairline," Abdullah notes, and you don't need "much in your oil or lotion" to make a difference. She says to "add a few drops to a 4 ounce bottle of lotion."

Lotion is preferable to oil in Abdullah's opinion because it absorbs quicker into the skin. "Use the solution twice daily," she adds, stressing to "not expect to see results overnight." It will take at "least six months," she says.

Additional Rosemary Haircare Tips

If you're not sure what type of hair loss you have, Abdullah says to "use more than one essential oil in your lotion." You can add a few drops of rosemary to "counter DHT and peppermint to stimulate the hair follicles," she suggests.

"Still, it will take time before you see results," she emphasizes, and recommends visiting your dermatologist, trichologist or hair stylist for more advice regarding your personal haircare situation.

Supplements For Hair Growth: Biotin & Pumpkin Seed Oil

Biotin, Abdullah says, is a "worthy" supplement choice for those of us with fine or thin hair as it increases "circulation to the scalp to aid hair growth, and stop hair thinning."

She also recommends trying a "pumplin seed oil supplement," as it has been "scientifically proven to grow more hair and aid those who have thinning hair," she notes. The more you know!
