Every year, the experts at 1-800-Flowers select one flower and one plant to feature based on symbolism, popularity, and projected trends. And the wait for 2024 is over—the flower delivery company just revealed their picks. Now, you can get ahead of next year’s floral trends, and be inspired just in time for gifting season.

2024’s flower of the year is the soft and gorgeous peony, a bloom that was selected for its starring role in popular bridal bouquets and frequent use in gifted arrangements. It’s a sweet-scented flower that works overtime to bring a fresh, floral scent to any space. The strength of the scent depends on the flower’s variety, but the peonies that are most commonly selected tend to smell the strongest.

“Looking ahead to 2024, we’ve selected the peony and philodendron as our Flower and Plant of the Year to help our customers express themselves, bring joy, and cultivate meaningful connections with the important people in their lives,” Abhay Patel, 1-800-Flowers brand president, said in a press release. “Peonies, with their vibrant and delicate petals, are the perfect gesture for romantic and celebratory occasions, while the philodendron with its striking foliage, inspires plant and decor enthusiasts to bring nature indoors.”

The most well-loved peony colors are light pink and white, with these hues reigning supreme in the bridal industry. When it comes to gifts, pink and red prove most popular, but peonies offer a wide color range to choose from.

The beauty of the peony bouquet is that, unlike other arrangements, it's often composed entirely of peonies—all in different sizes and stages of bloom. Some arrangements feature enormous, fluffy petals in their most bold flowering stage alongside others that are partially closed, creating more of a spherical shape. These early-bloom flowers are easy to open up if you’re going for a fluffier look, too. Simply stick the bloom straight down into a bowl of warm water and gently twirl the stem back and forth to ease the petals open.

1-800-Flowers notes that the peony is one of the flowers most frequently searched on their website, and it’s featured in many of their products, from bouquets to candles.

As for the 2024 plant of the year, the philodendron received the title. This year has seen the philodendron trending in many forms, and the excitement over this trusty plant hasn't shown signs of dying down.

If you’ve been desperately hunting for the striking variegated pink plant, or are looking to add the ever-popular Philodendron Birkin to your plant collection, 1-800-Flowers has announced the addition of both varieties to their website.

The philodendron is known to symbolize nature and renewal, and it's also commonly recognized as a symbol of love. This makes the plant a meaningful gift—and they’re incredibly easy to care for. These vine plants can grow up a moss pole or trail all over any space they’re placed in. They’re easy to propagate, so you can enjoy growing plenty of plant roommates all on your own.
