How is eye cream different from other skincare essentials?

According to experts, the skin around the eyes is thinner than what's found on the rest of your face, which also makes it more sensitive. "Eye creams are specially formulated for the delicate skin around the eyes. Therefore, they have a gentler formulation, lower concentration, and strength of certain active such as retinol, and vitamin C, and less irritants," Lolis explains.

There are also benefits to using an eye cream if you have eczema, allergic contact dermatitis, rosacea, or other skin conditions since the formulas are generally more gentle. Of course, check with your dermatologist first, but Lolis notes that eye creams are typically more suitable for this area.

Which ingredients should you look for in the best eye creams?

Another of the most common ingredients you’ll find in eye cream is caffeine. "Caffeine is an antioxidant, so it helps to provide defense against free radicals that hasten the skin aging process. It also helps promote circulation and temporarily constrict blood vessels, reducing the appearance of dark circles and puffiness caused by fluids pooling in the tear troughs," Turner notes.

Vitamin C is another good choice for eye cream. It’s one of the most powerful antioxidants used in skincare and not only defends the skin against free radical damage but also helps promote collagen production to help firm and smooth and inhibits tyrosinase, thus both preventing hyperpigmentation and brightening the skin.

Additionally, hyaluronic acid is ideal for under-eyes because it’s non-irritating for most skin types, and helps draw water into the skin to keep it plump and hydrated. "This can be especially valuable under the eyes where the skin is so thin—plumping it up with hyaluronic acid can really improve the appearance of fine lines," Turner adds.
