How to Expertly Apply Makeup to Deep-Set Eyes

Whether you've been doing your own makeup for years, or you've just begun your journey, you can master eye makeup to make your deep-set eyes look more beautiful than ever. Just like every eye shape, there are several defining characteristics that make this type different from the rest. Deep-set eyes are often fairly large and are set farther into the skull. They give the appearance of a prominent brow bone, which you’re likely looking to downplay to better show off your eyes. Here’s how to prettify your peepers in just a few simple steps using items you likely already have in your makeup bag, including eyeshadow, eyeliner, an eyelash curler, and mascara.

1. Brush on Shadow

Use your favorite eye shadow palette that has a variety of neutral colors. (We love the subtle shades in The Blushed Nudes palette by Maybelline New York, $9.98 on Amazon.) First, pick a lighter, and possibly a pinker, shade to apply all over the lid to de-emphasize the shadow made by your brow bone. Then, pick a highlighter to brush right under your brow bone to brighten everything up.

2. Draw Eyeliner

Don’t be intimidated when it comes to applying eyeliner—we promise it’s much easier to do than you think. We recommend using a gel liner to create a softer, less dramatic look. An easy-to-use option is L'Oréal Paris Infallible Lacquer Eyeliner, $7.49 on Amazon. First, take your index finger and stretch out your lid by lightly pulling on the outer corner. Then, draw a thin line right across the roots of your lashes. If you prefer a less polished look, you can lightly smudge your liner using a brush or your finger.

3. Curl Lashes

Using a good quality eyelash curler, such as the Great Grip Eyelash Curler by Tweezerman, $9.95 on Amazon, curl your eyelashes upward. To make them even more lifted, use your hairdryer to heat up your curler for a few seconds.

Editor's Tip: Make sure your tool isn’t too hot before using it by lightly touching the curler with your fingertip. If it's too warm for your hand, it's too warm for your lids.

4. Add Mascara

Complete the look with a few swipes of mascara. Not all mascaras are created equal, so you’ll want to carefully select yours based on the look you desire. To achieve more volume, we suggest L'Oréal Paris Voluminous Mascara, $6.99, on Amazon. To get more length, we recommend Covergirl Total Tease Mascara, $8.33 on Amazon. When you’re applying mascara, start at the root of the lash, and slowly wiggle the wand up as you blink. You can add as many or as few coats as you’d like depending on the amount of drama you prefer.

Now that your eyes are beautified, you can move on to the rest of your face. The next step is to apply your foundation, followed by a lipstick color of your choice. For a daytime look, we recommend using a softer shade such as Rimmel Lasting Lip Finish in number 42, $18,83 on Amazon. If you’re going out for a night on the town, amp up your look with a bold color like L'Oréal Paris Infallible Le Rouge Lipstick in Tender Berry, $7.92 on Amazon. And you're done! Your look is now complete for any occasion.
