Sex and the City is officially returning to TV this December. Entitled And Just Like That, the HBO Max limited series will reunite Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis as their characters Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes, and Charlotte York.

You may notice that a name is missing from that list. Kim Cattrall, who portrayed PR maven Samantha Jones in the series, will not be returning for the miniseries. “Samantha isn’t part of this story. But she will always be part of us. No matter where we are or what we do," Parker wrote on Instagram in response to a commenter who alluded to Parker's rumored tension with co-star Cattrall.

In an interview with TV Line, HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys provided an explanation for Samantha's absence. According to Bloys, Samantha simply grew apart from her friends. “Just as in real life, people come into your life, people leave,” he said. “Friendships fade, and new friendships start. So I think it is all very indicative of the real stages, the actual stages of life.”

That addresses Samantha's absence, but there are still many other mysteries. Speaking to Vanity Fair, Parker revealed she has just as many questions about the characters' lives as we do.

"Who are they in this world now? Have they adapted? What part have they played? Where have they fallen short as women, as friends, and how are they finding their way? Did they move with momentum? Are they like some people who are confused, threatened, nervous [by what’s happening in the world]? I’m so curious and excited to see how the writers imagine these women today," Parker said.

Michael Patrick King, the series's original showrunner, has assembled a writer's room to provide answers. Audiences are hungry to know, too. In July 2021, Page Six acquired a photo of one of the reboot's top-secret scripts, which clues us into the drama. Here's what we know about the revival.

The limited series will consist of ten half-hour episodes.

And Just Like That is set to add a few more hours to the Sex and the City canon—five, to be precise. The limited series will consist of 10 half-hour episodes.

Luckily, we have a lot more content to fall back on when the revival is finished. The original Sex and the City ran for six seasons, with a total of 94 episodes. Two Sex and the City movies, one in 2008 and another in 2010, continued the friends' stories.

And will premiere in December 2021 on HBO Max.

In October, the network confirmed And Just Like That will premiere in December. Along with the news, Sarah Jessica Parker took us behind-the-scenes of the show in a teaser video.

The series began filming in June.

On June 11, Parker posted an Instagram photo from the show's first table read. There's a mask on the table before her, indicating that the table read is in-person (and all our faves are gathered in one room). "Got here way too early. Nerves all a wonderful jumble," she wrote. The script contains large-font notice that it will be collected after the table read is through—so don't expect any spoilers to get out.

On July 9, Nixon posted a photo from the first day of filming, making us even more excited.

The reboot will address the COVID-19 pandemic—but we're not sure how.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Parker said that the COVID-19 pandemic will “obviously be part of the storyline, because that’s the city [these characters] live in. And how has that changed relationships once friends disappear?" Some fans speculated that COVID-19 may be the explanation for Samantha's absence.

Chris Noth will return as Big.

In May 2021, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Chris Noth—better known to SATC fans as Big—would be part of the Sex and the City revival. "I’m thrilled to be working with Chris again on And Just Like That…How could we ever do a new chapter of the Sex and the City story without our Mr. Big?" executive producer Michael Patrick King said in a statement.

For a while, though, Noth's presence in the show was hardly guaranteed. In 2018, journalist James Andrew Miller claimed that the third Sex and the City movie—which was never made—planned to feature Mr. Big's death. "[The script] calls for Mr. Big to die of a heart attack in the shower, relatively early on in the film, making the remainder of the movie more about how Carrie recovers from Big’s death than about the relationship between the four women," Miller said on his “Origins” podcast. Noth denied the rumors of his character's death. “There’s no way he was dying. That was all a lie,” Noth told the tabloid The Sun.

In August of 2021, Noth and Parker were photographed together on the set of the revival.

In some photos, Noth is holding a piece of paper in his hand. He and Parker appear to be rehearsing a scene together. Based on their expressions, their characters seem to be in some kind of fight—which is, let's be real, typical for Big and Carrie.

John Corbett, a.k.a. Aidan, will be coming back as well.

Speaking to Page Six, Corbett confirmed that he was "going to do the show," and called the opportunity "very exciting." In the interview, he let on that his role would be prominent. "I think I might be in quite a few [episodes]. I like all those people, they've been very nice to me," he said.

However, the Instagram account @commentsbycelebs discovered a comment left by Parker on a fan account saying, "I'm not one saying one way or another whether our beloved Mr. Corbett's interview deals in fact or fiction but the response is amazing to read."

Will he be reuniting with his former flame, Carrie? Will be hired to use his carpentry skills? We can't wait to know.

So will other favorite cast members.

And Just Like That's casting update in June 2021 confirmed Miranda and Charlotte's husbands are still in the picture (in some capacity). Miranda's cohort Steve Brady (David Eigenberg) will be back and Harry Goldenblatt (Evan Handler) will return as well.

The late Willie Garson played Carrie's best friend, Stanford Blatch. Garson told Us Weekly that the new show isn't quite a reboot or a remake, but rather a revisiting of beloved characters. "It’s new episodes about people that we know and their lives now, which has nothing to do possibly with their lives 10 years ago," he said. Garson died of pancreatic cancer after filming. Parker called his absence a "crater," and wrote a heartfelt tribute to her friend of over 30 years.

Finally, Mario Cantone will be back as event planner Anthony Marentino, who planned Charlotte's wedding and married Stanford in the second Sex and the City film.

Grown-up versions of Charlotte and Miranda's kids were cast, too.

The last time we saw Brady Hobbes and Lily and Rose Goldenblatt on Sex and the City, they were small tykes. If you're curious, the infants who played Charlotte and Miranda's kids won't be reprising the roles in the revival.

Instead, a slate of Gen-Z talent will join the cast. Up first? Niall Cunningham (Life in Pieces) will play Brady, Miranda and Steve's son.

Cree Cicchino (Mr. Iglesias) will play Brady's girlfriend, Luisa Torres.

Charlotte and Harry's daughters, Lily and Rose, will be played by Cathy Ang (Over the Moon) and Alexa Swinton (Old, Emergence).

Carrie and Big's marriage might be in "big" trouble.

As you'll recall, Carrie and Big got married in the first Sex and the City movie, following a dramatic trip to the aisle. They end the second movie re-committing to their relationship after Carrie's brief dalliance with her ex, Aidan, in Abu Dhabi.

But Page Six acquired a photo of the revival's script which indicates Carrie and Big's relationship is changing. In fact, they may be getting a divorce. In the scene, Carrie is sitting with Miranda, Charlotte, and Stanford (the new Samantha, it seems). She confesses she's struggling: “I was taping the podcast, I was washing my hair. Yes, I wasn’t eating or sleeping, but at least I felt good about my marriage. Now I’m just one of the wives he was taking care of?”

Note that Carrie speaks in the past tense, as if their relationship is already over. The theory of Big and Carrie's splintering relationship is bolstered by the fact that Bridget Moynahan, who plays Natasha Naginsky, Big's second wife, was spotted on set. She was photographed in a scene with Parker. Maybe they're discussing their mutual"big" problem.

However, a post on Noth's Instagram page contradicts all of the above. Carrie and Big are in bed together. Perhaps Noth and Parker are filming a reconciliation scene—or the calm before the storm.

Sara Ramirez is joining the cast as a new member of Carrie's inner circle.

Sara Ramirez of Grey's Anatomy will play Che Diaz, a queer, non-binary stand-up comic. They meet Carrie through their podcast. "Che is a big presence with a big heart whose outrageous sense of humor and progressive, human overview of gender roles has made them and their podcast very popular," HBO says, per Indie Wire.

Other newcomers include Sarita Choudhury, Nicole Ari Parker, and Karen Pittman. The Hollywood Reporter elaborated on their roles. Choudhury, whose starred alongside Denzel Washington in Mississippi Masala, will play Seema Patel, Manhattan real estate broker. Pittman (The Morning Show) will play Columbia Law professor Dr. Nya Wallace. Parker (Empire, Chicago PD) will play Lisa Todd Wexley, a documentarian and Park Avenue mother of three.

Christopher Jackson, who played George Washington in Hamilton, will join the cast as Herbert Wexley, a hedge fund banker and Lisa Todd Wexley's (Ari Parker) husband. LeRoy McLain (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) will be Andre Rashad Wallace, a musician married to Dr. Nya Wallace (Karen Pittman).

The show promises a "diverse" writer's room.

Featuring a predominantly white cast, Sex and the City has long been critiqued for its lack of diversity. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter 20 years after the finale, Parker called the series "tone deaf." She added, "You couldn't make it today because of the lack of diversity on screen. I personally think it would feel bizarre."

According to Parker, the Sex and the City revival is trying to avoid making the mistakes of its predecessor. Parker said the show's new writer's room is "incredibly diverse in a really exciting way.”
