The impacts of war reach far beyond those who are involved first-hand in the conflicts—those experiences can even be passed down, affecting future generations in unexpected ways. That's the principle behind the series My Grandparent's War, which is set to return for its second season on PBS on April 11.

The show takes A-list stars on a journey into their own family histories, uncovering secrets and never-before-heard stories about their grandparents and how they were impacted by a variety of global conflicts. This season, the big names who will be unearthing the stories of their ancestors include actors Kit Harington, Keira Knightley (Pride and Prejudice; Pirates of the Caribbean), and Toby Jones (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy; The Girl) as well as songstress Emeli Sandé, who will each retrace their grandparents' steps as they learn about the events that changed their relatives' lives.

In the exclusive first trailer for the season (above) the show hints at some of the revelations ahead, including Knightley's emotional connection to letters from the past, the fact that Jones's grandparent had an up-close view of one of history's most dramatic days, and a shocking unveiling about Harington's grandfather—that he was, in fact, a spy charged with keeping an eye on the former King Edward VIII after the monarch abdicated in 1936.

Watch the full trailer right here, and tune in for the full season when it returns on April 11 on PBS, PBS.org and the PBS app.
