Exclusive: ‘OITNB’ Star Laura Prepon Says Becoming a Mother Is Like Waking Up
Orange Is the New Black star Laura Prepon is notoriously private about her personal life, and rightfully so. As someone who has been in the spotlight since she was 18, snagging a starring role on the long-running series, That ’70s Show, it makes sense that she’s inclined to keep her family and professional lives separate. So, when we sat down for an exclusive interview with Prepon and she spoke candidly about becoming a mother and building a family with her husband, Ben Foster, it was all the more resonant.
Prepon and Foster, who most recently starred in the award-winning film Leave No Trace, wed last June after welcoming their daughter in the summer of 2017.
The 39-year-old actress and director opened up about how her life has changed since starting a family, saying, “Being a mom is everything. Since I’ve been on [Orange Is the New Black], I’ve gotten married and I’ve had a kid. I don’t even know what my life was like before this.”
She went on to say that she experienced a paradigm shift upon giving birth: “It’s such an incredible change. And the only way that I can describe it is that when I became a mother, I woke up. It’s like someone turned on the lights and I would never go back,” she said. “Now that I’m a wife and a mother, my priorities are so clear. There’s no room for anything that doesn’t fall in line for what’s good for my family.”
Speaking of family, Prepon also gave us the scoop on her and Foster’s relationship, explaining, “My husband and I have known each other since I was 18, but we took the long route to each other. [Parenthood] has been such a phenomenal experience so far. I’m just so blessed.”
As Prepon prepares for the end of Orange Is the New Black’s, she says there are many projects on the horizon. And while she’s grateful for her thriving career, her husband and daughter make it that much more gratifying. “I’m just so happy to be with my partner and we have our daughter and we’re just building,” she said. “He’s also an actor and he’s going to direct his first project this year and we’re just creating and loving and living life and it’s wonderful.”
