From Town & Country

Chef and lifestyle expert Martha Stewart built a $400 million empire on the importance of self-care in many forms—delicious recipes, home decor, comfortable shoes, CBD gummies—the list goes on. And to say that, at 79, she looks great doing it doesn’t scratch the surface. Her glowing confidence is only growing with age (read: that viral pool-side thirst trap) and let’s be honest, we could all use more of that energy in our lives.

So what’s her secret? “I don’t pay any attention to age at all … I have a very strong constitution and I just don’t think about it,” she told The Wall Street Journal in December 2020.

While a shift in perspective can certainly be as powerful as any diet or skincare regimen, Stewart has the help of those, too. And thankfully, she’s shared plenty about them over her 30-plus years in the public eye. Here’s everything you need to know about how Stewart stays strong, healthy, and bold at nearly 80.

1. She drinks green juice every morning.

Stewart has been juicing ever since she could get her hands on a machine. Every morning, according to a recent “What I Eat in a Day” video for Harper’s Bazaar, she reveals how she makes her famous green juice with fresh produce from her greenhouse: cucumber, parsley, mint, half of an orange with the skin, celery, “a little piece” of ginger, and pineapple. “My green juice is very special to me,” she explained in the video. “I think it’s really the secret of good skin, I think it’s the secret of good healthy hair.”

2. And loads up on fresh, healthy foods.

Despite being the original food influencer, Martha does her best to keep all the goodies people send her out of reach. “I try very hard to keep nothing in the house that will entice me,” she said in her “What I Eat in a Day” video.

Instead, she focuses on eating a balanced diet grounded in nutrient-rich foods. “I want organic, I want clean, I want tasty, and I want healthy,” she said. That includes fresh eggs for breakfast, a light lunch (something like tuna salad), roasted, organic chicken for dinner (typically for a group), and the occasional vodka cocktail.

3. She stays active and spends time outdoors.

Staying active has never really been an issue for Stewart, who’s been on the run since her career began. That’s why she can’t meditate. “Do you think a hyper person like I can meditate? No, I’m not good at that,” she told CNBC. “But I do like yoga. And it’s not relaxation; I do Iyengar yoga, which incorporates a little bit of relaxation.”

She continued: “I [also] horseback ride. I’ve been lucky to have my horses during this entire [pandemic]. Outdoor activity is very good. Sitting around inside, I don’t think is a good thing.”

4. She takes care of her skin and indulges in “injectables” twice yearly.

Stewart has a tried-and-true skincare routine that begins with a 5:00 a.m. face mask every day using the Gommage Yon-Ka exfoliating mask, Susan Ciminelli’s Hydrating Gel Mask, or Mario Badescu’s Super Collagen Mask.

After masking, she cleanses in the shower with the Chanel La Blanc Fresh Brightening Foam Cleanser, tones with Mario Badescu’s rosewater spray, treats with SkinCeuticals’ vitamin C serum or BioEffect’s EGF Day Serum, and protects with SkinCeuticals’ SPF 50. At night, she removes her makeup, treats with one of her day serums, and moisturizes with either the Yon-Ka Pamplemousse Vitalizing Cream or Mario Badescu’s Revitalin Moisturizer.

For an extra boost, Stewart indulges in injectables twice a year, per WSJ. “I love skincare, I love technology, lasers—I love all those things that will help you look better,” she said. “It’s not about looking younger, it’s about looking better, and the better you look the younger you look.”

5. Light makeup is key.

“I can go out with just a tinted primer from Amore Pacific and look fine for like half a day, Stewart told Allure in 2013. “And a little Bobbi Brown bronzer, and I need eyeliner—either a powder or Estée Lauder or L’Oréal liquid eyeliner. I like foundation, too, but it has to be a cream, like Clé de Peau Refining Fluid Foundation. It’s so beautiful, and you don’t have to use powder. I find powder very aging.”

6. She stays curious and goes with the flow.

The core element that fueled Stewart’s 97 books, countless business ventures, multiple magazines, and more is her relentless curiosity. “I have a lot of energy so that also keeps me current and going. And I’m also very curious about everything, so I’m not set in my ways at all,” she told WSJ. “I think that that helps tremendously, as one ages, to not be set in one’s ways, to be totally flexible, go with the flow.”

7. She embraces her sensual side.

After Martha (unintentionally!) took the thirst trap that made the internet swoon, she craved more and that, my friends, is called confidence. “I didn’t know what a ‘thirst trap’ was, but now I do. Now I’m looking for the next [one,]” she told People in November 2020. “I love doing those promiscuous, provocative things, because it’s just fun.” Enter: her February photoshoot with Harper’s Bazaar that also went viral.

8. CBD helps her manage stress and get a good night’s sleep.

“I’m an insomniac and the CBD Martha Stewart oil drops are so helpful,” she told CNBC. “A dropper full of the orange [flavored oil] or a dropper full of the lemon... I also love my CBD gummies.

9. She prioritizes her overall health.

Whatever it takes for her body to keep up with her curious mind, Stewart is willing to try it. That’s why she eats mostly homegrown, organic foods and why she takes vitamins and supplements. ”I’m very interested in supplements...in what will make you live longer, what will make your brain stay clear and what will make you continue to be active,” she told CNBC. “Those are the kinds of things that I’m looking for, not the secret to eternal youth … But I am trying very hard to keep myself in as good shape as possible for a long as possible.”

That’s also why she got the coronavirus vaccine. “The vaccine was great. I’m looking forward to my [second] shot,” she added. “But I’m certainly not going to drop my guard. We are very careful … But I feel a little bit more secure for my own health and I’m going to be very careful for everybody else’s health, too.”

10. She never gives up and is always trying something new.

Stewarts advice for someone who’s looking to remain youthful or reinvent themselves is simple. “Go for it. That’s what it’s all about,” she told CNBC. “It’s always better to try, to try and to try.”

She continued: “I’m constantly trying new things … I love developing things and building things. I am building a new house. But those are things that keep one young, keep one interested, and keep one relevant.”
