From Women's Health

As she turns 44, Drew Barrymore is a living, breathing advertisement for her cosmetics company, Flower Beauty. While she doesn’t claim to be perfect and she’s a fan of honest, barefaced selfies on Instagram, her skin often looks flawless and she just seems so refreshingly positive.

That extends to her views on aging, too. “I feel aging is a privilege,” she told Glamour UK. “It’s about how to do it gracefully, with humor, self-love, and a respect for the process, and that’s always been really important to me.”

Barrymore said that’s especially important to her now that she has daughters. “I started having girls and I thought, thank god these were my initial instincts,” she said. “Now I can carry them out in an even more deep and profound way.”

Getting older has also had a positive effect on her mental health. “I get a little better each day,” she told Today. “You have to get older to get better and wiser and calmer and focus on the right things. I’m a way better person than I used to be. And trust me, I’m very critical of myself.”

Here’s what Barrymore is doing to look and feel so amazing in her mid-40s.

She follows a simple skin care routine

Barrymore knows skin care, and she swears by a pretty simple routine. She told Insider that she always starts with a “good light cleanser” and her go-tos vary from Cetaphil to products by skin care expert Christine Chin.

She follows that up with a toner. “Anything from down and dirty witch hazel or I still love old-school Noxzema or Sea Breeze,” she said. Finally, she said, “a brightening serum is a must.” She likes Skinmedica’s Lytera 2.0 Pigment Correcting Serum, and Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream for added hydration.

She’s not interested in looking ‘unnatural’

While Barrymore doesn’t judge people who undergo plastic surgery, she said it’s not for her. “Not messing with my face or chasing some unnatural beauty is a standard I live by,” she told Glamour UK.

She also takes beauty criticism in stride. “I have dark circles under my eyes. I was at my dermatologist’s recently who said to me, ‘Can I shoot some Juvederm up there? It will raise the skin and it won’t be so sunken, which is causing the darkness to look worse, because it’s lower than the natural light that is hitting it,’” she recalled. “And I went: ‘No, but I’m gonna go home and start highlighting under my eyes, so thank you for the tip!’”

She prioritizes sunscreen

Applying sunscreen daily is one of the most effective ways to prevent premature aging-and Barrymore takes it seriously. Still, she admits it is hard to find one that doesn’t spur breakouts. That’s why she swears by Elta MD formulas (which are commonly recommended by dermatologists!). They’re lightweight, don’t cause acne, and offer solid protection from the sun’s damaging UV rays.

She swears by acne spot treatments

Adult acne is confusing and frustrating at best. Apparently Barrymore grapples with it, too, and she loves one treatment in particular: Clinique’s Acne Solutions Clinical Clearing Gel. “I swear by this!” she wrote on Instagram. “Not cheap. Not unattainable.”

She’s learned to go with the flow

Barrymore told Today that the opportunity to star in Santa Clarita Diet came in the wake of her divorce, when she thought the timing was off. “I was not looking for a job,” she said. “I had actually stopped acting for several years because I wanted to raise my kids, but then a shift happened in my life and I was separating from their father and it was just a very difficult time.”

But Barrymore said she realized taking on the role of a flesh-eating realtor was therapeutic for her. “Ironically I think it taught me a valuable life lesson, which was sometimes when you think something is the worst timing and the worst idea, it can actually become a thing that saves you and pulls you out and gives you a new focus and empowerment, and switches your constant stuck way of thinking and feeling and put it into something else that might actually get you to a healthier place faster,” she said.

She’s big on laser treatments

The actress isn’t into plastic surgery but she loves a ‘Clear + Brilliant’ laser treatment with her dermatologist, Roy G. Geronemus. The treatment “just schluffs the barnacles of brown and sun damage off your face,” she told Glamour UK. “It’s the greatest thing ever. It’s non-invasive and there’s no downtime. It’s like microdermabrasion laser, but it always makes me feel so much more attractive.”

She pays attention to her chest and neck, too

“Your beauty routine starts at this line, and we must work upward!” Barrymore captioned an Instagram shot of herself holding her hand to her chest. “We forget our neck and chest!!!!” Barrymore also said she tends to “forget anything below the chin” but tries to make a point to cleanse and care for the skin on her chest and neck too.

She’s all about being honest

Barrymore recently started a social media campaign called #TheWayItLooksToUs after she said she was late to her children’s school, wore sweatpants, and started giving herself a hard time. So, she decided to call out the way it seems things seem to be and the way things actually are, she explained on Instagram Stories. She then shared a video of her daughters tracking powdered sugar all over her floor and pointed out that she, like most women, gets red-faced and sweaty after working out hard.

She works really hard to be fit

Eating well and exercising regularly isn’t easy, and Barrymore has made it clear that she struggles like everyone else. “Let’s face it, I hate it,” she said during an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden of dieting for Santa Clarita Diet. “I would much rather eat fettuccine alfredo all day long.” When she’s filming, Barrymore said she follows a vegan diet. “I work out every day, and it’s so healthy,” she said. “It gets to be euphoric."
