The Exact $88 Eye Shadow Palette Gemma Chan Wore to the 2019 Met Gala

Gemma Chan walks a red carpet like a queen, always a graceful presence, always a visual feast; and the 2019 Met Gala — the actress's first — is no exception. With the theme of camp, it's always interesting to see how celebrities who usually stick to classic glamour will take the bait to go that "extra" mile. Inspired by the headdress Elizabeth Taylor wears in the 1968 film Boom!, Chan's makeup artist for the evening Monika Blunder used all Tom Ford Beauty to create a makeup look fit for a literal crown. If anyone can do camp with elegance, Gemma nailed it. (I mean, when Elizabeth Taylor is on your mood board, you're pretty much there.)

"She's such a classic beauty, I wanted to make sure that came through but I also wanted to do something colorful and bold to go with the theme, " Blunder tells Allure about working with Chan. She said Chan was inspired by the sparkle from her Tom Ford gown, her crown, and the rainbow gems on the inside of her left fingers. Her sleek, straight glass hair under the crown was an ode to Cher at Studio 54.

Blunder used all Tom Ford Beauty makeup on Gemma. She started with complexion by priming Gemma's skin with the Complexion Enhancing Primer in #2 Peach Glow and mixing the Traceless Foundation in Natural #6 and Pale Dune #3 for a perfect match. She then contoured Gemma with the Soleil Glow Powder in Terra and dusted the shade Gold Dust on her cheeks and forehead for a bit of shimmer.

"I wanted her to look luminous, but also not too glowy — we went for a modern makeup look," Blunder explains. To create dimension and brighten under the eye area, Blunder made a v-shape with the Illuminating Highlighting Pen in Naked Bisque #5 and applied the Emotionproof Concealer in Natural #6, blending on top.

"For the eyes, we went back a forth and decided on the inspiration from the eye on Elizabeth Taylor in the movie Boom! — dramatic but not too dramatic that it competes with the crown. I used Shadow Extreme in Silver all over the lid and Shadow Extreme in Black and Cocoa Mirage Eye Quad in the taupe color for the crease. I used the brighter and darker purples in the Daydreamer Eye Quad as the lower liner and a little on the top liner over the Eye Defining Pen to elongate the eye."

Blunder then curled Gemma's lashes and applied two coats of Emotionproof Mascara as well as some light strip lashes. She used Lip Color Matte in Pink Tease as the base, and topped it off with Lip Spark in Thrust (which happens to be a favorite lip color of mine).

"The gown is very sparkly and silver, so I wanted to bring those colors into the eye makeup," Blunder says of the final look. Mission accomplished — Gemma Chan looked like absolute camp royalty.
