Former ‘Bachelor’ contestant criticized over ‘fame’-hungry decision: ‘Shame on you’
Former “The Bachelor” contestant Amanda Stanton is back in the press, a month after being called out for breaking shelter-in-place rules in LA and driving to Arizona for a haircut.
This time, Stanton posted on Instagram that she took her two young daughters, ages six and eight, to a Black Lives Matter protest in Newport Beach, Calif. on June 2. According to Stanton, the march was “peaceful and powerful.”
“I understand not everyone is comfortable protesting or bringing kids and I totally understand that!” Stanton posted on her Instagram Story. “I went back and forth on it and it was a decision I made so they could learn from an early age to use their voice and exercise their rights to stand up for something that’s so important.”
One photo Stanton shared showed her and her 6-year-old daughter Charlie holding up a “Black Lives Matter” sign. In an Instagram story, Stanton took a photo of her daughter making the sign at home before heading to the protest.
Critics were quick to attack Stanton for going to the march for two reasons: Some were concerned about her bringing her young kids to “a riot” while others were convinced that this was more about the photo opportunity.
“I can’t believe you put your girls in an uncompromising situation and instill fear in their hearts just for fame. Shame on you!!” one person commented on the photo.
“She was proud to make her sign and be there and I’m happy she got to experience the emotion and passion in everyone there,” Stanton replied.
Other users were not so quick to judge, with many fans thanking Stanton for using her platform to talk about the protests and sharing the experience with her kids.
The U.S. has entered the ninth day of protests following the death of George Floyd. Floyd was killed in police custody during Memorial Day weekend and his death — along with the recent killing of 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery by two armed white men in Georgia and Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old EMT who was fatally shot by Louisville Metro police after they barged into her apartment — has sparked worldwide demonstrations demanding the end of police brutality and racist rhetoric.
