A new limited series about the legendary American designer Halston, born Roy Halston Frowick, is officially in the works. Simply Halston will chronicle the rise and fall of the designer who helped define the 1970s and 1980s fashion scene, and in many ways became a celebrity himself. Today it was announced that Ewan McGregor will play the designer, as well as play executive producer on the project.

The series will be written by The Affair's Sharr White and will be directed by Dan Minahan of American Crime Story.

Halston originally began working as a milliner, rising to fame after designing the pillbox hat that Jacqueline Kennedy wore for the 1961 Presidential Inauguration of her husband John F. Kennedy.

From there, the designer went on to expand his eponymous label to a full women's ready-to-wear collection by 1969 that would re-define American fashion, thus garnering a flock of high-profile celebrity clients with his sexy yet sophisticated designs that fit right in at Studio 54 or on the red carpet of film premieres.

Hollywood icons like Anjelica Huston, Lauren Bacall, Margaux Hemingway, Elizabeth Taylor, Bianca Jagger and Liza Minnelli were all fans of the dynamic designer who was rising quickly to international fame himself.

BY 1973, Halston sold his company, but retained creative control as the principal designer. Ten years later, Halston's financial backer was acquired by another company, causing him to slowly lose control of his namesake label, until he was ultimately forced out, despite trying to buy it back. By 1990 the line was discontinued and the same year Halston passed away due to AIDS-related complications, he was 57 years old.

There are no details yet as to when the limited series is set to air.
