Everything We Love About the Updated Apple MacBook Air
Apple has launched its latest version of the popular MacBook Air and it brings a welcome boost in processing and graphics power, a redesigned keyboard, among other upgrades. Combined, the new features make Apple’s insanely elegant, incredibly popular notebook even more exciting.
Key Specs
• Tenth-generation Intel Core i3 (dual-core), Core i5/i7 (quad-core) processors
• 13.3-inch Retina display with True Tone Technology
• 8/16 GB of RAM; up to 2 TB SSD
• Touch ID fingerprint sensor
• Two USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 3 compatibility
I spent a week testing the latest MacBook Air — here’s why it’s the best new MacBook for most consumers.
It Packs a Lot of Power
The 10th-generation Intel processors of the new MacBook Air are a massive improvement over the eighth-generation ones found in the notebook’s predecessor. They are considerably more powerful (up to twice as much!), yet plenty energy-efficient. The same goes for the notebook’s Intel Iris Plus graphics.
For the first time, power users demanding portability can equip the MacBook Air with a quad-core processor. I tested a notebook with a quad-core Intel Core i5 and it performed flawlessly as my work computer. It effortlessly handled a busy workflow of countless web browser tabs, Slack, Spotify, Twitter, Apple Pages, and editing large image files with Affinity Photo.
Thankfully, the power bump hasn’t had an effect on the battery performance of the MacBook Air. According to Apple, it can deliver up to 11 hours of web browsing, or 12 hours of video playback between charges. During my testing, the notebook easily made it through a full workday.
It Has an Even Better Retina display
Apple added its signature True Tone technology to the new MacBook Air's Retina display, which is a welcome upgrade from the previous generation. It automatically adjusts the screen’s color temperature and intensity depending on the ambient light around you, creating a more natural viewing experience.
As experienced on other new Apple products like the iPhone 11 Pro and the iPad Pro, the display with True Tone is sharp, vibrant, and equally great for conquering email, editing photos, and catching an episode of The Morning Show.
It Has a Fantastic Keyboard and Trackpad
The new MacBook Air has the same fantastic Magic Keyboard as the 16-inch MacBook Pro. Its backlit keys have longer travel and exceptional tactility, which help deliver a more accurate and stable typing experience.
The Air’s Force Touch-capable trackpad is as excellent as it has always been and provides seamless navigation throughout the laptop.
Wrap-Up
Just like the previous MacBook Air, the latest iteration delivers a phenomenal audio experience, especially considering its form factor. The notebook’s three built-in microphones were handy for making FaceTime and Zoom calls.
The most exciting bit about the new MacBook Air is its sub-$1,000 starting price. Apple also deserves a hat tip for doubling the storage capacity. The basic model comes with 256 GB. Once again, you can order the notebook in gold, silver, or space gray.
