This question is the namesake of episode 2, which officially kicks off Mabel, Charles, and Oliver's investigation. Tim was the victim of a sudden murder at The Arconia, where he lived for many years. Our first real impression of Tim is from a phone call he has in the elevator mere moments before he was murdered by someone else in the building. He was wearing a suit with his hair slicked back, which nods to the fact that he may be a businessman. But what kind of business has he gotten himself into?

Tim and Mabel originally met at The Arconia when they were 10. Mabel had been visiting her aunt when she interrupted a game that Tim "had to play" every day. They became close friends and eventually went on to solve mysteries with Oscar and Zoe throughout their adolescence. Thus, the Hardy Boys were born.

Why was he murdered?

There's no clear evidence behind the motive of Tim's murder just yet, but what we do know is that he knows something valuable. In episode 2, we see a flashback of him and Mabel before he died. "Oscar's getting out, Tim," she tells him. "You can make things right, you know what happened that night. You didn't even say anything."

It seems like Tim witnessed something that happened at a New Year's Eve party from his teen years and kept his mouth shut. In a later scene, Mabel speaks to the ghost of Tim and asks "Why didn't you tell the cops what you saw that night? And does [your death] have anything to do with what happened back then?" Based on these interactions alone, it's likely that someone really wanted to keep what Tim knows under wraps — therefore leading to his demise.
