Everything You Need To Know About Target's Return Policy

Shopping at Target, or Tar-jay, as some have dubbed it, is more than just a place to shop. It truly is an experience enjoyed by so many! From home decor to clothing and accessories, there is so much good style to admire. Plus, the prices are usually more affordable than most department stores, which means we can just buy more! Sometimes, however, we do need to make a return. Whether it was an impulse buy, the item simply didn't work out or you're shopping for someone else, Target has you covered with its exceptional return policy.
As long as you adhere to Target's guidelines, making a return is as easy as can be. We'll go over all of the Target Return Policy guidelines.

What Is Target's Return Policy?
For starters, it's important that the item being returned is unopened and without damage. You wouldn't want to try and return a Christmas tree that was used for the season and then no longer needed! Items that are opened, damaged or do not have a receipt may be denied a refund or exchange.
Basic Return Policy
Target's basic return policy is that they will accept most unopened items for return within 90 days of purchase for a full refund. You will need to have your receipt or they can look up your payment if you purchased with a credit or debit card.
For items purchased online, the return window begins at the time of invoicing which is when any part of the order is shipped.
Electronics are one exception and come with a 30-day return policy.
It may be possible to also return opened items but it is at the discretion of the Target associate. Don't plan on this working for something with obvious use.
Target Plus Partner's Return Policy
The Target Plus Partner's return policy is pretty much the same as the basic return policy but it is for items purchased through one of Target's partners. A Target Plus Partner is a third-party company that sells and ships items directly to you through Target.com or the Target app. There are about 450 of these sellers.
These items do have to be returned to Target either at a store or by mail. Some items, like electronics, may have a shorter return window. The individual item description will have the exact return policy of that item.
Target RedCard Members
If you make a purchase using a Target RedCard, you get an additional 30 days to return your items. That means you get a full 120 days before the return window ends.
Target-Owned Brands Incentive
Even though Target already has a great return policy, they have one exception to it that you need to know. You're probably thinking "here comes the fine print with the big 'but,'" but don't worry—there's good news!
For any Target-owned brand items, you get a whole year to return them with a receipt. And with all of the brands that Target owns, that means a huge part of the whole store. Currently, there are close to 50 different Target-owned brands.
This means you could start Christmas shopping in January and still be able to return an item before Christmas if it is no longer a good choice!

Cat & Jack Brand Special Return Policy & Warranty
Target stands by its Cat & Jack brand so much that they also offer a one-year warranty on its clothing. This means that if the children's clothes don't last for one year, you can still return them for a full refund.
Even if the clothing has rips and tears, it is still returnable for that first year. The tricky part will be holding onto a receipt for a full year. There is a chance that your purchase made with a card could be found electronically, however, there are no guarantees.
Target Registry Returns
If you are returning items that you received from your registry, simply log in to your Target account, select your registry from the "Registry" page, go to "Offers and Benefits" on your registry's home page, select "Start a return," then select a store. According to Target policy, the barcode that generates must be used at the store that you selected as well as on the date it was created, and you can receive a Target gift card for the amount of the return.
Target's No-Receipt Return Policy
If you do not have your receipt, the next step would be to try to look up an order with the credit card that was used as payment. If you also do not have the credit card or it was a gift from someone else and you do not have a gift receipt, you may be able to get a merchandise return card, which can only be used in-store. In order to get the merchandise return card for a no-receipt return, you will also be required to show your ID.
Target's Holiday Return Policy
For the most part, the holiday return policy is the same as the regular return policy. However, there are a few exceptions.
Usually, electronics only have a 30-day return policy and Apple products have to be returned in 15 days. However, Target has taken into consideration the fact that Christmas gifts of electronics may have been purchased well before Christmas. So the window for returns does not start at the point of purchase but on December 26 instead—as long as the purchase was made on October 1 or after.
There are a few gift items that cannot be returned including:
open or defective collectible items like special edition Barbies or action figures
personalized or digital download items
open video games, software, movies or games (which are only exchangeable for the same titles)
gift cards
