A Stranger Things prequel is heading to the stage!

Netflix announced on March 1 that a play titled Stranger Things: The First Shadow will open in London's West End this year. The play is based on an original story by Jack Thorne, Kate Trefry and the Duffer Brothers, who created the worldwide phenomenon Stranger Things.

“We are beyond excited about Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Collaborating with the brilliant Stephen Daldry has been nothing short of inspiring, and Kate Trefry has written a play that is at turns surprising, scary, and heartfelt,” series creators Matt and Ross Duffer said in a statement.

They added, “You will meet endearing new characters, as well as very familiar ones, on a journey into the past that sets the groundwork for the future of Stranger Things.”

A press release for Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which is described as a "gripping new adventure," teased that the play will take the audience "right back to the beginning of the Stranger Things story – and may hold the key to the end."

When does the Stranger Things play open?

The new story is scheduled to premiere live onstage in late 2023.

Stranger Things fans will have to travel to the U.K. to watch the play at the Phoenix Theatre in London's West End district.

How to get tickets for the Stranger Things play

Fan who register at strangerthingsonstage.com starting March 1 will be given priority access to tickets. Tickets will go on sale in spring 2023.

Will the Stranger Things play feature characters from the Netflix series?

In a statement, the Duffer Brothers revealed that there will be "familiar" characters. The play will feature younger versions of Jim Hopper, Joyce Maldonado and Bob Newby, in addition to Henry Creel, who all have appeared in the Netflix series.

According to a synopsis for the play, "Hawkins, 1959: a regular town with regular worries. Young Jim Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob Newby’s sister won’t take his radio show seriously and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and get the hell out of town. When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family finds that a fresh start isn’t so easy … and the shadows of the past have a very long reach."
