*Spoilers for Squid Game season 1 below!*

Netflix's latest K-drama series, Squid Game, has taken the world by storm since its release in the U.S. The show follows a similar plot to Battle Royale and The Hunger Games where a group of strangers fights to the death for a prize. Unlike its predecessors, though, Squid Game's players willingly volunteered to play the game.

456 desperate contestants compete in multiple rounds of Korean childhood games to win $38.5 million that can help with their troubles. However, there's much more at stake than ego as these losses result in death. And, much like The Hunger Games, there's one player named Gi-hun who plans on rebelling against the authorities to end the game.

So, can we expect a second season? Will the game go on, or will Gi-hun put a stop to it? Ahead, find everything you need to know about Squid Game season 2.

Is season 2 of Squid Game happening?

There's no word yet on whether there will be a second season of Squid Game, but it seems promising since it topped the Netflix charts. In the past, the streaming service has taken some time to see how well shows perform before officially giving them the green light for more seasons.

The show's writer and director, Hwang Dong-hyuk told Variety that while he's pleased with the success of Squid Game, the process of making it was "long and stressful." He admitted that he has no plans of repeating that process any time soon and that in the meantime, he'd like to develop feature films.

"I don't have well-developed plans for Squid Game 2. It is quite tiring just thinking about it," Hwang said. "But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I'd consider using a writers' room and would want multiple experienced directors."

However, it does seem like there's some sort of resolution at the end of season 1. Gi-hun won the game and made it out alive, yet he's only begun to process the trauma of what he's done to get there. He's also discovered that the old man he befriended during the game was the person who created it. Talk about a plot twist.

The game is set to continue as Gi-hun witnesses new recruitment, but he vows to put an end to the deadly competition once and for all. This can be interpreted as a segway into season 2 since there's more of the story to be told, but there's also a possibility that with the end of the game comes the end of the series.

Because of the Battle Royale nature of Squid Game, a lot of cast members won't be returning for another season (unless they appear in a flashback sequence). If the show has a second season, odds are Gi-hun will come back to try and put an end to the game. Other than that, we can expect to see some brand new faces.

What will season 2 be about?

If there's a second season, we'll most likely follow Gi-hun's attempts to end the game. Who knows how he'll play it? Will it be an obvious quest á la Katniss Everdeen, or will he play his cards discreetly to reach his desired result? At this point, anything can happen.

When does season 2 come out?

Netflix hasn't officially renewed Squid Game for a second season just yet, so there's no telling on when it'd hit the streaming service. In the meantime, we'll stay on the lookout and keep you updated with the latest.
