The theory that Andrew Garfield will return as Spider-Man in Venom 3 has just had some cold water thrown on it. While the marvel_updat3s X (formerly Twitter) account reported back in June that Garfield would be reprising his role as the web-slinger, an anonymous report from an “industry scooper” reveals Venom 3 may actually contain a different version of Spider-Man.

X-user @MyTimeToShineHello, who posts movie, TV, and gaming scoops largely within the Marvel sphere, took to the platform on Tuesday to break the news. Remarking that the Venom movies articulated the character’s split personality better than the recent Spider-Man 2 game for PS5, the user said: “I can’t wait to see him and Tom Holland’s Spidey fight (sooner than you think).”

Tom Hardy’s Venom appeared in a short post-credit scene in Spider-Man: No Way Home, though originally he was supposed to have a much larger role in the multiverse sequel. In an interview, Empire, No Way Home writer Chris McKenna spoke about the original script including more of Eddie Brock.

“There were versions where [Brock] shows up earlier,” McKenna revealed. “We were going to try to have him show up at the Statue of Liberty [for the final fight], and we were even toying with having him stuck in the Lincoln Tunnel.”

When asked about an upcoming Venom-vs.-Spidey battle, McKenna said: “I have no idea. That is above our paygrade.”

A report from Screen Rant published last month said it’s unlikely Holland will appear in Venom 3 because he was not announced in the cast list. However, the MCU is well known for keeping casting news top secret right up until a film's release. The article posited that, instead of giving us a Spider-Man we've already met, Venom 3 might introduce a new Spider-Man altogether; or possibly even incorporate Miles Morales from the animated Spider-Verse series.

Venom 3 was one of the productions temporarily shut down due to the Hollywood strikes. In addition to Hardy, it stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Juno Temple. It’s currently set for release on July 12, 2024.
