Grab your laptop, your charger, a blanket, and some emotional-support snacks for your return to the "heartrending, heart-pounding, swashbuckling" (in the words of Lewis Tan, who will play Tolya Yul-Bataar) Grishaverse. Here's everything you need to know about Shadow and Bone Season 2.

When is Shadow and Bone season 2 coming out?

On December 8, 2022, Netflix announced that the second season of Shadow and Bone is hitting the streamer on March 16, 2023. New photos from the upcoming season were also posted along with the announcement on Twitter, revealing that some of our fave cast members are making their way back to our screens next spring.

Is there a trailer for Shadow and Bone Season 2?

The day has officially come — we finally have the trailer for Shadow and Bone season 2, and the darkness has returned. In the nearly three-minute clip, General Kirigan brings more shadows with his seemingly indestructible new army. Alina Starkov and Mal Oretsev gather a group of powerful new allies to take him down. Watch the full trailer here:

Netflix also dropped a sneak peek to tease the show's second season. The 41-second clip shows us not one, but two (!!) new characters for the first time. We catch a glimpse of Ravkan prince Nikolai Lantsov, who's played by The OA star Patrick Gibson, as he talks to Alina. The sixth member of the Six of Crows, Wylan, also makes an appearance in the sneak peek. Watch the whole clip below.

Are there any Season 2 first-look images?

You better believe it. Netflix released some production stills of the new season that are holding us over while we wait for S2 to drop. From Nikolai Lantsov inspecting a map by candlelight (presumably on a ship, because IYKYK) to sibling duo Tolya and Tamar ready for battle and one iconic shot of Jesper and Wylan, March 16th can't come soon enough.

What about clips from Season 2?

Yes! We have not one but two sneak peeks that'll have you on the edge of your seat for the March 16th drop. Netflix released a clip of Alina and Mal attempting to recruit Nikolai as an ally by convincing him to join their search for Morozova's Sea Whip. The legendary creature (that may or may not be real) is one of three amplifiers that Alina is hoping to use to hone her powers and ultimately tear down The Fold. "Adventure, danger, money..." declares Nikolai. "Now you're speaking my language!"

In a second clip, five out of six of the Crows (Six of Crows, hint hint!) finally unite on-screen. Jesper is filled with suspicion upon meeting Wylan, the Crows' new demo man, but Kaz puts his foot down. "So this novice is telling me he's our new demo man. Raske is better. Or even Pim," muses Jesper. "And yet Wylan is the one I hired," counters Kaz.

The spunky Nina Zenik also joins the group — and to everyone's surprise, they recognize her name upon introduction. If you're curious as to why the name "Nina Zenik" elicits such a reaction, it's because the Crows heard her name in Season 1 — but had yet to meet her until now.

Who will be coming back for Season 2?

Jessie Mei Li (Alina Starkov), Archie Renaux (Malyen Oretsev), Freddy Carter (Kaz Brekker), Amita Suman (Inej), Kit Young (Jesper Fahey), Ben Barnes (General Kirigan), Danielle Galligan (Nina Zenik) and Calahan Skogman (Matthias Helvar) are set to reprise their roles.

Netflix also revealed that four new cast members will be joining our other Shadow and Bone faves for Season 2. The streaming platform took to Twitter to share the news.

In season 2, Lewis Tan will play Tolya Yul-Bataar, Anna Long Brophy will take on the role of Tamar Kir-Bataar, Patrick Gibson will play Nikolai Lantsov and Jack Wolfe will bring Wylan Hendriks to life. According to a report by Entertainment Tonight, Danielle Galligan (Nina Zenik), Daisy Head (Genya Safin) and Calahan Skogman (Matthias Helvar) have all been promoted to series regulars for the upcoming season.

What will Shadow and Bone Season 2 be about?

The real question is what won't it be about? Luckily, we have a bit of a clue already since the series follows the book series of the same name by Leigh Bardugo. Season 2 will likely follow the events of Siege and Storm. We'll follow Alina and Mal as they go on the run, meanwhile, the Darkling will be coming after them at almost every turn as he tries to take over Ravka.

The biggest surprise will involve the Crows, who headed off back to their home, Ketterdam. If you're a book fan, you'll know that on paper, the Six of Crows books are completely separate from the Shadow and Bone trilogy. Since this is technically a prequel series for Kaz, Inej, Jesper, and the rest of their gang, we'll have to wait and see exactly how they're involved in Season 2's storyline and what their next adventure will be.

We got a sneak peek into the plots of S2 when cast member was asked to describe Shadow and Bone Season 2 in three words during a special video message played at Netflix's Geeked Week. True to his character General Kirigan, Ben Barnes replied "bigger, bolder and badder" while Archie Renaux (Mal stans, rise!) offered the words "love, power, and heartbreak." Freddy Carter, who plays Kaz Brekker, shared, "Action-packed, epic, and Crowtastic" and Jessie Mei Li, the one and only Alina Starkov, simply said, "full of love."

What have the creators said about the future of the series?

While we're still waiting for the release of the second season of Shadow and Bone, series creator and showrunner Eric Heisserer talked to Collider about the future of the series. While there might be three books in the series, Eric notes there's so much that happens that it can go beyond three seasons.

"I can tell you with not an insignificant amount of embarrassment that I don't remember how or why I said I had a three-season plan. I had been up for 30 hours straight at that point when I sat down with Steve and the other reporters [for that set visit interview]. And so I certainly had my own monkey language going on in my brain. There's a lot for us to cover, of course," he revealed. "It can be far more than three seasons because Leigh's just written so many books and there's a lot of ground for us to cover. I feel like this is going to remain strong and healthy even at four seasons and beyond that, who knows? But I feel very nervous talking about that. I feel like I'm the baseball player pointing at the rafters and I have no idea."
