Everything You Need to Know About Prince Charles’s Glamorous Birthday Party at Buckingham Palace

Royals from across Europe gathered at Buckingham Palace to celebrate Prince Charles's 70th birthday in style.

Prince Charles, next in line to the British throne, turned 70 yesterday—and the royal family celebrated in style.

First, the documentary Prince, Son, and Heir: Charles at 70, aired on the BBC. Then, Clarence House released a series of stunning portraits—including two that showed Charles with his sons and grandchildren—to the public.

And last night was the grand finale: an extravagant affair at Buckingham Palace.

Prince William and Kate Middleton were seen driving to the party dressed to the nines, as were Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Other attendees included Queen Rania of Jordan, Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium, Prince Frederik and Princess Mary of Denmark, Queen Sophia of Spain, Prince Albert of Monaco, King Harald and Queen Sonjia of Norway, Princess Beatrice, and Princess Eugenie with her new husband Jack Brooksbank. A picture of Prince Charles, taken at Clarence House, shows the heir dressed in a tuxedo with his wife, Camilla, in a navy blue, off the shoulder gown.

Once everyone arrived at Buckingham Palace, the Queen gave a touching toast in her son’s honor. “It is a privilege for any mother to be able to propose a toast to her son on his 70th birthday. It means that you have lived long enough to see your child grow up,” she said. "My mother saw me turn 70, of course. And she was heard to observe that 70 is exactly the age when the number of candles on your cake finally exceeds the amount of breath you have to blow them out.”

She also praised Charles’s parenting skills, and called him a “dedicated and respected heir to the throne to stand comparison with any in history.”

The Queen ended it all with a joke: "So this toast is to wish a happy birthday to my son, in every respect a duchy original” (Duchy Original is the name of Charles’s organic food company). "To you Charles. To the Prince of Wales.”
