Get ready to transport back to your middle school years, because Percy Jackson and the Olympians is getting its own adaptation on Disney+! 🥹

The five-book fantasy YA series was written by author Rick Riordan, who will serve as producer for the upcoming TV show. The series was formally picked up by Disney+ and was teased way back 2020, but Rick confirmed the news nearly two years later with a Twitter announcement.

"The wait is over, Demigods," he said in the clip. "I am thrilled to be the first to tell you that Percy Jackson and the Olympians is really, truly, and for sure coming to your screens. The smart folks at Disney+ have given us the green light."

Good news, Demigods! We'll get to watch the all-new Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV show in time for the holiday season. Percy Jackson and the Olympians will hit Disney+ on December 20, 2023, per a teaser trailer that was released on August 18. The 30-second clip gives us a sneak peek at Percy, Annabeth, and Grover as they gear up to embark on the adventure of a lifetime.

What is Percy Jackson and the Olympians about?

The television show, which is also being executive-produced by author Rick Riordan, is based on his book series of the same name. The show's official synopsis is as follows:

The series contains five books, so there's a chance this TV adaptation may follow the contents of each book per season. But the first season hasn't even premiered yet, so there's no telling whether it'll be green-lit for more.

Who is in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians cast?

While fans of the 2010s Percy Jackson movies have been itching for a cameo from Logan Lerman (who originally played the titular character) in the upcoming series, there has been no confirmation of his involvement. We do get to see a new class of Demigods though, as newcomers are starring as the core trio.

Per Variety, 13-year-old Walker Scobell is set to play Percy Jackson. Another report revealed Athena's daughter Annabeth will be played by Leah Sava Jeffries and their half-human, half-goat pal Grover will be played by Aryan Simhadri.

Recurring guest roles include Megan Mullally as Mrs. Dodds (aka one of Hades' three Furies, Alecto), Jason Mantzoukas as Dionysus, and Glynn Turman as hero-trainer Chiron. Percy's mom will be played by Virginia Kull, while Timm Sharp will star as his stepfather, Gabe.

In November 2022, Disney+ also announced that Lin-Manuel Miranda will take on the role of Greek God, Hermes, while Timothy Omundson and Jay Duplass have been cast as Hephaestus and Hades.

And then there is the big question of Zeus and Poseidon! In January 2023, Lance Reddick was announced as Zeus, while Toby Stephens was revealed to be Poseidon.

Are there any Percy Jackson trailers?

In September 2022, Disney+ posted a 50-second teaser trailer for the show. In it, Walker Scobell reads the first few lines from the first novel of the series, The Lightning Thief.

"I didn't want to be a half-blood. Being a half-blood is dangerous. It's scary. Most of the time, it gets you killed. If you think you might be one of us, I advise this: Turn away while you still can," he said in the clip. Watch the full teaser trailer below:

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Rick Riordan reassured fans who are worried about another adaptation.

"We have been involved in the series since its inception, since the very, very earliest conversations about what a new Percy adaptation might look like, how it would be sketched out, whether it would be episodic," he revealed. "So, I feel comfortable telling fans of the books who have been waiting — in some cases, decades — for this kind of faithful adaptation, that this is the one you've been waiting for. We are involved and I think you're gonna love it."
