Sony continues to expand its Spider-Man film universe with the Madame Web movie. The film is based on the comic book character, an ally of Spider-Man. The character is an unusual pick to headline a film, resulting in a slew of rumors circulating over what the plot of the movie could be. So far, Sony hasn't released many details, but here is what we know about Madame Web.

Where is Madame Web in the Spider-Man timeline?

Set photos indicate that Madame Web may take place in the early 2000s, around the same time as Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man films, especially if Easter eggs fans have found are any indication.

The character Madame Web has powers that enable her to perceive the entire multiverse, include the future, present and past, which may account for at least some of the throwback elements.

Dakota Johnson as Madame Web

Dakota Johnson has been cast as Madame Web, a clairvoyant with psychic abilities to see into the "Spider-Verse." The casting suggests that the film will take a different approach to the character than how she is typically depicted in the comics (a very, very old lady with myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune condition that causes trouble breathing and severe muscle weakness). It's suspected that Johnson's character is Cassandra Web, though her styling (including her red jacket) is more akin to Julia Carpenter, another Madame Web who's also been Spider-Woman.

“It was a wild experience,” Johnson told Variety of filming Madame Web. “I don’t think you can be prepped to go into anything like that, but I learned so much. It’s a completely different way of making films, you know? And then, I went into making one of my company’s tiny, tiny little movies right after, so I got a real taste of different kinds of cinema last year.”

Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter

Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney stars as Julia Carpenter. It is unclear if this version of the character will become Spider-Woman or not. In the comics, Julia Carpenter has also been Madame Web.

Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon

Isabela Merced of Transformers: The Last Knight and Rosaline, is rumored to play Anya Corazon in Sony's Madame Web movie. In the comics, Anya Corazon becomes Spider-Girl.

Celeste O'Connor as Mattie Franklin

Celeste O'Connor, who's been in hits like Ghostbusters: Afterlife and A Good Person, will play Mattie Franklin in the Madame Web movie. In the comics, Mattie Franklin becomes Spider-Woman.

Tahar Ramin in an undisclosed role

French actor Tahar Rahim has an undisclosed role in Madame Web. He was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2021 for The Mauritanian and 2022 for The Serpent. Some leaked set photos show who appear to be stunt doubles for Rahim, Johnson and O'Connor; Rahim's double appears to be wearing a Spider-Man-style suit and fighting O'Connor's character, while Johnson's character appears to be injured.

Adam Scott in an undisclosed role

Adam Scott's role in Madame Web hasn't been officially disclosed, but there is some speculation that he may play Ben Parker or an adult Peter Parker in the film. Aside from his Parks and Recreation and Party Down fame, Scott recently earned critical acclaim, as well as Golden Globe and Emmy nods for his dramatic role in Apple TV's hit Severance.

Mike Epps in an undisclosed role

Comedian Mike Epps will reportedly appear in Madame Web. His role hasn't been disclosed, but we can assume he'll provide some great comic relief.

Zosia Mamet in an undisclosed role

Girls star Zosia Mamet will appear in the Madame Web movie, but her role hasn't been disclosed just yet.

Emma Roberts in an undisclosed role

Emma Roberts has a role in Madame Web, though her role has not yet been revealed. She teased of her role, "What I can tell you is I'm not a superhero. Some people may think she's a superhero but not ... like I don't have supernatural powers. So I can tell you that."

There has been speculation that Roberts may play Mary Parker, Peter Parker's mother, in the Madame Web movie, but this hasn't been confirmed.
