Everything We Know About Legally Blonde 3

Rumors about a third installment for the Elle Woods cinematic universe started swirling in 2018, but it looks like Legally Blonde 3 is finally getting all of its scented, pink maribou details in line. Deadline first reported news of the sequel to a sequel and confirmed that the flick would bring Reese Witherspoon back for another go-round as Woods and enlist rom-com savant Mindy Kaling and comic genius Dan Goor (the creator of Brooklyn Nine-Nine) to write the script.

While original writers Kirsten "Kiwi" Smith and Karen McCullah had been slated to write the script, Deadline notes that Kaling and Goor are starting all over, offering a "new fresh spin" instead of polishing up anything that Smith and McCullah had started.

Witherspoon actually talked about that version while she was out promoting Big Little Lies.

"[We have] a script, but we haven't shot anything," she told Entertainment Tonight. "[Elle's] a very beloved character. You just want her to go on a hero's journey like she does in the first movie, and I'm having a great time working on it."

When is Legally Blonde 3 coming out?

When news broke in 2018, the film was slated to hit theaters in time for Valentine's Day 2020. Witherspoon even posted an Instagram about it, but fans know that the movie didn't materialize in time.

Details have been scant since the announcement this week, though very little was revealed after the 2018 news, too. There's no release date yet for the movie. IMDb lists May 2020 as the start of production, though it's tough to tell when things will get underway with the coronavirus pandemic bringing Hollywood to a standstill.

Who are Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor?

Actor/writer/producer Kaling is a household name by now with appearances on The Office (both as an actor and a writer) and her titular show, The Mindy Project. She's also got plenty of behind-the-camera credits. She created the Netflix series Never Have I Ever, co-created Hulu's reboot of Four Weddings and a Funeral, and also created NBC's Champions. As for Goor, he's got a comedy pedigree, too, with credits on Parks and Recreations as well as Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Who is directing Legally Blonde 3?

Deadline reported that original producers Marc Platt and Adam Siegel would return alongside Witherspoon in a producing role with her company, Hello Sunshine. A director hasn't been announced yet. Robert Luketic directed the first film and Charles Herman-Wurmfeld helmed the sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde.

Who is coming back?

Reese Witherspoon has already confirmed her return, but she's not the only one that's mentioned a desire to be a part of the new flick.

"I know that there's a script that's in the works, I'm told," Coolidge told ET. "And I keeping seeing all this press about it. I hear that it is going, but I just don't know what the timeline is. But you know, if I'm asked to do it I'll definitely be in there. I would love to play Paulette again."

Luke Wilson said that he'd to come back, too, if the chance came up.

"I have not talked to Reese about it, but yeah I always kind of hear rumors here and there," he told ET. "Never anything official about them doing another Legally Blonde, but I'd love to do another one. I mean, just that character Reese played was so funny at the time and that has kind of become this iconic character now."

Of course, without knowing what's in Kaling and Goor's script, there's no telling who could come back. The original films included Selma Blair, Linda Cardellini, Holland Taylor, and Victor Garber, just to name a few notable cast members.

Unfortunately, Bruiser the chihuahua won't be coming back. The pup actor that played the iconic role, Moonie, passed away in 2016. There's always a chance that the coveted role will be recast, however.

But I want Reese and I want Reese now

Legally Blonde spun off an official sequel, a straight-to-video spin-off called Legally Blondes that was released in 2009 and introduced Woods's twin cousins Annie and Izzy to the world (it's probably better if everyone forgot all about it), and a Broadway musical. If you need more Reese in your life (who doesn't), there's her Hulu series, Little Fires Everywhere, her HBO series, Big Little Lies, and the Apple TV+ series she executive produced, The Morning Show. Basically, if there's a streaming platform, Witherspoon has a series on it.
