Will ‘The Gilded Age’ Return for Season 3?HBO

After a year-and-a-half break, The Gilded Age is returning for season 2 on Sunday, October 29. This means fans are finally getting more drama, more love stories, more beautifully over-the-top mansions, and more Carrie Coon being viciously sassy as new money socialite Bertha Russell. It's exciting news! But, after such a long wait for the second season, it's only natural to already wonder what lies ahead. Will there be a third season of The Gilded Age? Will the wait be as long again? Who will return if it does happen?

They're all valid questions. Unfortunately, though, we don't have answers to everything involving a potential third season just yet. Read on to find out what we know about The Gilded Age season 3 so far.

Is The Gilded Age coming back for season 3?

The Gilded Age has not yet been renewed for season 3. During an interview with Deadline in May, HBO exec Francesca Orsi talked about shows that were pending renewal for third seasons.

"We’re just assessing various shows, what more we need to be making, what more we can make, what more we have, the return in life of a series" Orsi said. "Each show has a job to do, given the price tag that we give to it, and there’s a viewership component, and there’s a critical response element to it and, of course, the buzz nature of a show. It’s those elements that we are always keeping in mind and discussing relative to whether or not a show will continue."

She added, "That factors in for Perry Mason, for Winning Time, for instance, for Gilded Age, so we have to play everything out and see how well they do." (FWIW, Winning Time has since been canceled.)

So, yeah, get everyone you know to watch the show and HBO might decide it's worth the expense.

When might The Gilded Age be renewed?

This is pure speculation, but here's what we know: The second season of The Gilded Age was announced less than a month after the series premiered. So, it's possible a season 3 renewal will similarly happen while season 2 is still airing. Another HBO show, And Just Like That..., was recently renewed for season 3 just prior to its season 2 finale.

Or, you know, they might make us wait forever and wonder if we'll ever see George Russell (Morgan Spector) be held accountable for his railway schemes. (It's a 19th century period piece, okay? Railway schemes are some of the most intense drama we get!)

When will season 3 come out?

If—emphasis on if, clearly—The Gilded Age has a third season, it seems likely that there will again be a lengthy wait. For starters, the show could follow a similar production schedule. Filming for season 2 began in May 2022 and the show is coming out over a year later.

On top of that, there are the ongoing Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Production on the show would be delayed indefinitely during the strikes until the unions and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents major Hollywood studios, reach a deal.

Who would star in season 3?

You guessed it: There's no way to know! How fun! What we do know for this question, is that all of the main cast members returned for season 2, except for Thomas Cocquerel, who played the extremely untrustworthy Tom Raikes — aka the guy who stood up Marian (Louisa Jacobson) when they were supposed to elope. According to Deadline, 13 recurring cast members — including ones who play members of the household staffs — were promoted to series regulars.

For now, enjoy season 2 and all the drama it brings with it! You might be watching your last extravagant Gilded Age new money vs. old money ball for a while... or forever???
