Get ready to head back to Cambridgeshire, mystery fans, because everyone's favorite crime-solving vicar is coming back for more sleuthing. Grantchester, the beloved British series about an unconventional 1950s vicar who unwittingly winds up as a part-time detective in the titular English village, is set to return this fall with more murder, mystery, and moral quandaries. Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming season.

When will Grantchester season 6 air?

American fans can tune in for a whole new season of detective drama on PBS Masterpiece starting October 3, 2021 at 9 p.m. EST.

What will season 6 be about?

While details remain scarce on the overall arc of the season, series creator and head writer Daisy Coulam has teased that the first episode will be set during a holiday getaway gone wrong. She also revealed to PBS that the new season has some "game-changing" moments in store for some fan-favorite characters.

"Season 6 is going to be kind of game-changing for a lot of our characters—we’re going to put them all through the wringer this series," she said. "And it’s a big series for Leonard, where we’re going to take him to some quite dark places. Basically, we’re going to do a couple of quite big stories for our central characters that pull everyone into them. So it’s not separate strands—each strand will affect all of our lovely characters. It’s going to be emotional for all of them! I’m quite excited, actually, about the series. I feel like it could be the height of Grantchester."

Read the official season synopsis below:

It’s 1958 and trouble is brewing in the Cambridgeshire village of Grantchester. Reverend Will Davenport (Tom Brittney, Greyhound) relishes his role as a firebrand vicar, willing to rock the boat and challenge conventions to help people. But the very role he loves puts him at odds with his own ideals when his kind-hearted curate, Leonard Finch (Al Weaver) is caught up in a scandal. Will’s best friend, Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green), finds his principles shaken, housekeeper Mrs. Chapman (Tessa Peake-Jones) is distraught, and Geordie’s wife Cathy (Kacey Ainsworth) is defiant. With new crimes around every corner, and morality and legality at odds, it’s going to take all of Will’s skill and empathy to navigate these choppy waters and help the ones he loves.

It's based on a book series

If you're craving even more vicarly sleuthing, you can still get your fix with The Grantchester Mysteries—a series of six short story books by James Runcie. The books focus on the character Sidney Chambers, who also served as the main character on Grantchester for the first four seasons (played by James Norton) before Will Davenport (Tom Brittney) was introduced. The books were partially inspired by Runcie's father, Robert Runcie, the former Archbishop of Canterbury.
