The twelfth season of the heart-warming British hit Call the Midwife brought plenty of changes to the midwives of Poplar fans are already wondering what's ahead for the nuns and nurses of Nonnatus. Fortunately, we already know that it's not a matter of if the show will get another season, but when. Way back in April 2021, even before season 10 aired, the BBC announced that they had picked up the show all the way through season 13, but there are still plenty of questions about what the future holds for the series. Here's everything we know so far.

Will it be the last season?

In February 2023, the BBC gave Midwife fans a healthy dose of calm when it put to rest the long-swirling rumors about the show's potential end by renewing the series for a 14th and 15th season as well. As with previous seasons, the new outings will be made up of eight hour-long episodes as well as an annual Christmas Special.

"We are a family behind the scenes, on the screen, and in front of the telly, and I'm thrilled that we're all heading into the 1970s together," show creator Heidi Thomas said when the renewal was announced.

When will season 13 debut?

The show's new seasons typically air in the UK beginning in January, coming to the States after it's finished it's run across the pond. In keeping with it usual schedule, PBS Masterpiece has announced that the show will debut for U.S. audiences on March 17, 2024.

For those with PBS Passport, though, you can expect a few early arrivals—the episodes begin airing on the digital service starting on February 16, 2024, meaning you can get your fill of midwife drama even sooner. Sign up to donate a monthly or annual gift to PBS for access.

What is season 13 about?

Very little is known yet about what additional seasons of the show could encompass, but given the show's formula of having each season cover a year, that would have season 13 taking place in 1969, a year of serious upheaval in Britain and around the world. What all of that would mean for the midwives of Poplar, only time will tell.

Most of the core cast is expected to return, including Judy Parfitt as Sister Monica Joan, Jenny Agutter as Sister Julienne, Helen George as Nurse Trixie, Laura Main as Shelagh Turner, and Stephen McGann as Doctor Turner. Two new trainee nurses will also be joining the cast, played by Renee Bailey and Natalie Quarry.

In 2023, it was announced that Olly Rix, who plays Trixie's new husband Matthew Aylward, would be leaving the series, however it has since been reported that he not only appears in the entirety of season 13, but that there's still an option for him to return in the future.

Did you know that Call the Midwife is inspired by the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, who really served as a midwife in Poplar in the 1950s and '60s? Worth ultimately wrote a trio of books about her work, which Call the Midwife creator Heidi Thomas used to create the beloved show.
