There's simply nothing like a cozy murder mystery to usher in the beginning of fall, and come next September, Kenneth Branagh will be on hand with a new big screen Agatha Christie adaptation.

Following on from 2017's Murder on the Orient Express and 2022's Death on the Nile, Branagh will reprise his role as Christie's iconic detective Hercule Poirot, while also returning as director. Inspired by the author's 1969 novel Hallowe'en Party, A Haunting in Venice is billed as an "unsettling supernatural thriller" which takes place in post-World War II Venice.

Per an official logline quoted by The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will pick up with a retired Poirot living in self-imposed exile in the Italian island city, who is (inevitably) drawn back in for one last case after attending a séance at a decaying palazzo. "When one of the guests is murdered, the detective is thrust into a sinister world of shadows and secrets," the summary promises.

Following in the footsteps of Branagh's last two Christie adaptations for 20th Century Studios, the film will feature a star-studded ensemble cast that includes Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Dornan, Tina Fey, Jude Hill, Ali Khan, Emma Laird, Kelly Reilly and Riccardo Scamarico. The screenplay was written by Michael Green, who was nominated for an Oscar in 2018 for Logan.

"This is a fantastic development of the character Hercule Poirot, as well as the Agatha Christie franchise," Branagh said in a statement, per EW. "Based on a complex, little known tale of mystery set at Halloween in a pictorially ravishing city, it is an amazing opportunity for us, as filmmakers, and we are relishing the chance to deliver something truly spine-chilling for our loyal movie audiences."

A Haunting in Venice will, fittingly, begin filming on Halloween of this year, and is schedule for a September 2023 release.
