If you thought the Downton Abbey movie took the biscuit, then you’ll be delighted to know there’s a sequel in the works. From the script development to the cast, keep reading for everything we know about the second Downton Abbey movie.
1. Is there a script?
While we don’t have any details about the plot, producer Graham Neame recently confirmed they’re working on a script for the sequel. So ready thy Champagne.
“We’re working on what the story is, and when we might be able to make it,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “But it’s the same as the first time around: We have to try to get everyone back together again. And that was very challenging.”
2. Is there a cast?
No casting details have been released, though we wouldn’t be surprised if several original cast members returned to the big screen.
Not only did Joanne Froggatt (Anna Bates) seem excited about the idea, but Allen Leech (Tom Branson) also appeared hopeful.
“I think we would all be up for it. It all comes down to how this one does,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “If people really love it and there really is an appetite, then why wouldn’t we do it?”
Even Michelle Dockery (Mary Crawley) admitted that it felt surreal when they finished filming the first movie. “Because we loved doing it so much, [when we wrapped] it was definitely that feeling like, ‘Oh, we could do this again,’” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “And it would be wonderful to all get back together.”
3. Who's writing it?
Many believe Julian Fellowes is leading the screenwriting team, despite the fact that he played coy about the sequel in an interview with Vanity Fair.
“I mean, I wouldn’t mind making another film,” he said. “We were very happy making this one. So, let’s see what happens.”
Let’s just hope it does the franchise justice.
