Florence Pugh and Harry Styles Have Incredible Chemistry in the Newest Trailer for ‘Don’t Worry Darling’

Since you’ve had a couple of months to digest the fact that Harry Styles is no longer your boyfriend and, in reality, he’s actually Olivia Wilde’s boyfriend, are you emotionally strong enough to discuss the movie where it all went down? ’Cause that’d be the much anticipated Don’t Worry Darling, a psychological thriller set in a desert town (possibly Palm Springs?) in 1950s California.

Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming movie, including details on the cast (somebody already got fired, yikes), the plot, Olivia’s directing style, and the release date.

And this looks…saucy! It’s giving Black Swan vibes and also, like…Made for Love vibes (a very underrated HBO Max show that you should definitely watch). Raise your hand if you forgot Chris Pine was in this movie and also didn’t realize Olivia was acting in it as well as directing.

We know the release date

We got the official release date for the movie: September 23, 2022. Obviously, this means we’ll have to wait multiple months for this movie to hit our screens. That’s a huge bummer, but I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait.

Okay, yes, there have been paparazzi pictures of the cast in costume, but Olivia posted this picture of Florence in character.

I repeat: Olivia Wilde is the director

Although Don’t Worry Darling is only Olivia’s second directing project—she made her directorial debut in 2019 with the majorly successful and critically acclaimed teen comedy Booksmart—she’s already established herself as a badass force to be reckoned with behind the camera. Famously, she fired Shia LaBeouf from this project, citing her “no assholes policy,” a way of thinking that she expanded upon in Variety’s Director on Director series:

Luckily for everyone involved in Don’t Worry Darling, Olivia is committed to barring toxic attitudes from set and cultivating a supportive community of creatives. Get this: She apparently swore by group hugs with the Booksmart crew. Aww.

The cast is So! Damn! Good!

To name just a few A-listers, the cast includes Florence Pugh (who stole our hearts with her Oscar-nominated performance in Little Women), Star Trek’s Chris Pine, and Crazy Rich Asians’ Gemma Chan. Don’t Worry Darling probably got put on your radar back in early September 2020, when Deadline reported that Harry nabbed the lead role, replacing Shia. At the time, Shia’s departure was chalked up to scheduling conflicts, but Variety later confirmed that Olivia showed him the door following the news that FKA Twigs, Shia’s ex, had filed a lawsuit against him for “relentless” abuse.

The specific details around everyone’s roles are still a bit foggy, but according to Collider, Florence plays an “unhappy housewife,” Harry plays her “picture-perfect husband,” Chris maaaybe plays some kind of cultlike leader, and Olivia herself plays a supporting character. KiKi Layne, of If Beale Street Could Talk, replaced Dakota Johnson, who had to exit the cast due to scheduling issues.

Although we don’t know exactly when Olivia and Harry started romancing, we do know that she was suuuper enthusiastic about his casting. In Harry’s iconic Vogue cover interview, Olivia admitted that she “did a little victory dance when we heard that we officially had Harry in the film.” And she didn’t stop there―she full-on gushed about Harry, telling Vogue:

A COVID-19 positive test put production (temporarily) on pause

Lest we forget, we’re still living through a global pandemic, and even glamorous Hollywood isn’t immune. Don’t Worry Darling started production in early fall of 2020, but filming halted almost immediately when a member of the production tested positive for COVID-19 in November. According to Deadline, New Line studio confirmed that everyone on-set isolated right away and that filming picked back up after a 14-day pause, the recommended quarantine length.

Let’s discuss the plot, ’cause it sounds juicy

Here’s what we know, per a statement: “A 1950s housewife (Florence) living with her husband (Harry) in a utopian experimental community begins to worry that his glamorous company may be hiding disturbing secrets.” Olivia describes the movie as “very heightened and opulent” and “incredibly stylistic.” Sounds perfectly paranoia-inducing—I love it.

Filming has wrapped already

Florence announced as much when she posted the above Insta on February 14, writing, “It’s official, it’s a wrap! Yesterday was our final day on the set of Don’t Worry Darling.” Olivia did the same, sharing a sweet behind-the-scenes pic and praising Florence in the caption: “To work with an actor as talented and brave as @FlorencePugh is any director’s dream. I will forever be grateful for you, Flo. It was an honor to be your captain. Can’t wait for the world to see the astonishing work you’ve put into this movie.”
