Want to firm, tone, and strengthen muscles without surgery? With CoolTone® treatments, you can. The procedure is FDA-cleared for three areas of the body and requires little to no downtime. Here, learn more about the treatment and what to expect before embarking on your own CoolTone® journey.

Laura Dyer, PA-C, has been practicing clinical and cosmetic dermatology since 2005 and is a board-certified physician assistant specializing in aesthetic and clinical skincare.

How Does CoolTone® Work?

The FDA-cleared, noninvasive treatment uses Active Magnetic Pulse™ (AMP™) technology that was developed by muscle science experts and informed by leading athletic performances to trigger powerful muscle contractions that the body could not otherwise do on its own. These involuntary contractions strengthen the muscle fibers in the treated areas, leading to a stronger, firmer, and more toned appearance.

What Areas Does CoolTone® Treat?

CoolTone® is FDA-cleared for three areas of the body: the abdomen, glutes, and thighs. It can be used for the improvement of abdominal tone, strengthening of the abdominal muscles, and development for firmer abdomen as well as strengthening, toning, and firming of buttocks and thighs. “A good candidate for CoolTone® is someone at or around their ideal weight looking to strengthen, tone, and firm the muscles of the abdomen, buttocks, or thighs,” Dyer says.

How Long Does the Treatment Take?

Your provider will develop a customized plan to help you reach your desired goal, but treatments typically take approximately 30 minutes per area. For most patients, four treatments are recommended over the course of two weeks to achieve body contouring results. Muscles may atrophy or lose some of their strength and tone over time if they are not maintained through your usual exercise routine and diet, so you may wish to return in a few months if your provider recommends maintenance treatments.

What Does the Treatment Feel Like?

According to Dyer, the CoolTone® treatment feels like a series of strong, involuntary muscle contractions combined with active recovery moments and cooldown. Intensity levels range from 1 to 100%, depending on patient tolerance, so your practitioner can adjust the intensity of the magnetic muscle stimulation as needed.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Common side effects may include muscular pain, temporary muscle spasm, temporary joint or tendon pain, and redness at or near the treatment site. “Afterwards most patients feel the same type of muscle soreness they’d get after an intense workout,” Dyer says. “Most clients are able to return to their daily routine immediately after the procedure.” Any side effects generally resolve within days or weeks.

When Will I See Results?

After a series of CoolTone® treatments, Dyer says patients can expect the targeted area that was treated to feel stronger and appear to be more defined and toned. “Results can often be seen as soon as two weeks after the treatment, but it can take several months for the muscles to reach their ultimate shape,” she explains. “Just like going to the gym, maintenance is recommended.”
