Since the beginning of Donald Trump's presidency, First Lady Melania Trump has made headlines for spurning her own husband's public displays of affection. You'd think he'd stop trying to hold her hand, but alas! Below, see a complete timeline of Melania's shadiest moves against Donald. (Disclaimer: None of this takes away from her alleged complicity with the president's most controversial stances and his administration, but rather mere observations.)

January 2017: The presidential inauguration quickly turned into a meme after Melania's face drastically changed the second Donald stopped looking at her.

April 2017: A few months later, she had to physically remind her husband to place his hand over his heart during the National Anthem. Awkward.

May 2017: Then came the hand swats. The first—and still one of the most talked-about—happened when Melania and Donald visited Israel. As the president reached out to grab his wife's hand, she clearly wasn't having it and coldly swatted him away like a bug.

This was followed by Trump reaching for his wife's hand while exiting Air Force One, which Melania deftly avoided by reaching up to adjust her hair, just in time.

February 2018: Melania may have found a fool-proof method for avoiding her husband's hands when she wore a bright yellow coat draped over her shoulders rather than putting her arms through the sleeves. As she grips her handbag from within her colorful cocoon, Trump is unable to reach her.

April 2018: Appearing at a White House event with the president and first lady of France, the Trumps kept it frosty. The commander-in-chief can be seen repeatedly trying to get his wife's attention with his pinkie finger while she stands resolutely stiff until she finally relents.

January 2020: Twist! Instead of FLOTUS rejecting POTUS, this time it's the other way around. The first couple stood holding hands in seeming peace before Trump was caught aggressively tossing his wife's hand aside.

August 2020: Back to their old games. Perhaps this is how the Trumps show affection, through a cat-and-mouse-like dance of fingers and palms? Exiting Air Force One, Melania has her hands full—literally—gripping the rail with one hand and her handbag with the other.

As her husband tries to grab the handle of her bag and her hand, Melania deflects again and again to adjust her dress. Watch here.

October 2020: In a secretly recorded conversation from 2018, the first lady can be heard musing about how the press and the public view her relationship with her husband, saying, “They say I’m complicit. I’m the same like him, I support him. I don’t say enough. I don’t do enough….” It sounds like both a complaint against the media and a dismissal of her husband, as if she doesn't want to be associated with Trump's policies or viewed as part of his team. However, it's important we don't forget complicit actions and comments FLOTUS has made. Remember her remarks on the Obama birtherism conspiracy?

October was a big month for Melania. While leaving the debate stage on October 23, Donald and Melania held hands just long enough for photographers to capture it before Melania ripped her hand away. It's an especially telling moment in contrast to how Democratic opponent Joe Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, appear in public: always a solid team.

Seriously, doesn't this photo say it all?

Bonus: Her ongoing fight against cyberbullying. In May 2018, the First Lady announced her campaign, Be Best, to help children and young people fight the issues affecting them today, including opioid use, general wellness, and…social media. That's right: The wife of Donald Trump wants to encourage people to use social media platforms in positive ways, which seems a direct rebuke to her husband's favorite pastime, which is being downright nasty and decidedly unpresidential on Twitter. From calling other politicians by cruel nicknames to retweeting crude—and often factually incorrect—memes about his enemies, President Trump is one of the biggest bullies online.
