Every Royal Rule Meghan Markle Has Accidentally Broken

Here's a theory: Meghan Markle is an IRL Princess Mia Thermopolis of Genovia. (Shout out to the 2001 classic, The Princess Diaries.)

Hear us out. When Mia became Princess Mia, it was hardly a cakewalk. Her path was full of well-meaning stumbles and fumbles that didn't detract from her royal title, but rather, made her into a figure we could relate to. Let's all be honest for a second and admit that Markle's journey to Duchess-dom has some parallels.

As Markle has adjusted to royal life following her marriage to Prince Harry, not everything has gone perfectly by the book. There are a lot of very intricate (and very old) rules, primarily concerning etiquette, that must be followed at all times, and not growing up at least somewhat exposed to royal life like Princess Diana, whose grew up in an aristocratic family, or Kate Middleton, who at least grew up in Britain, has got to make it all the more difficult. Even so, she's been doing a pretty good job.

But in honor of the newest resident of Kensington Palace, let's take a look back at some of the moments that have made Markle the most relatable royal of them all.

When she didn't know whether she or Queen Elizabeth should get in the car first.

This is probably the most famous blunder, and it happened when Markle and the queen stepped out for their first-ever joint visit together. After totally nailing the trip itself, the two pals got to the car ... and had absolutely no idea how to proceed.

In all fairness, Queen Elizabeth seemed just as confused as Markle, so at least she was in good company.

When she went sleeveless at Trooping of the Colour.

There was more to Markle's expectedly pink Trooping of the Colour look than meets the eye. Unlike the other royals around her, she opted for a sleeveless slightly off-the-shoulder Carolina Herrera outfit. Only issue? It's a violation of traditional protocol.

As we've reported before, royals don't usually go for the sleeveless look at all, so Markle's choice marked a stark departure.

When she forgot her tights.

In another odd fashion rule that comes straight from Queen Elizabeth herself, all royal women must wear nude tights to public outings. It's a rule that took Markle some getting used to, and during her engagement period, she was spotted tights-free.

Thankfully though, she learned quickly and has since adopted that parameter in the way she styles herself.

When she gave out hugs.

Meghan's a hugger, and that hasn't changed even with her newfound royalty. For safety reasons, members of the royal family refrain from giving huge hugs to fans, but Markle couldn't help herself when she met a 10-year-old girl who wants to be an actress like she was.

When she picked an unconventional wedding cake.

Technically speaking, this one is just as much Prince Harry's fault. Instead of opting for a traditional fruitcake for their big day, Meghan and Harry went with the appropriately fresh lemon elderflower flavor, incorporating bright spring flavors instead.

Can't say we blame them for bucking tradition on that one.

When she started her bridal procession on her own.

On her wedding day, amid intense family drama involving her dad Thomas Markle, Meghan decided to do what other royal brides have not done in the past: walk herself partially down the aisle.

While Prince Charles stepped in to walk her down St. George’s Chapel for most of the procession, Markle began the walk on her own. A landmark move for a landmark bride.

When she covered a magazine.

Remember when Markle was the Vanity Fair October cover star, a mere month before her engagement?

While it's not completely out of the ordinary to see royals and magazines collide, Markle's interview—where she candidly talked about life with Harry—was far less conventional.

“We’re two people who are really happy and in love,” she said. “We were very quietly dating for about six months before it became news, and I was working during that whole time, and the only thing that changed was people’s perception. Nothing about me changed. I’m still the same person that I am, and I’ve never defined myself by my relationship.”

When she gave out autographs.

Another big no for royals is giving out autographs, but hailing straight from Hollywood, Markle did not get that memo while on a visit with Prince Harry.

But hey, she gave it to a little girl, so can you really blame her?

As long as she continues bending rules like this, we think she'll be allowed to get away with it just fine.
