MMPR team

We recently ranked every Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles character, but did you know that there was actually a five-issue miniseries where the Turtles crossed over with the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers? It even got a sequel last year, and it was an absolute blast seeing these two iconic teams go head to head on the same pages.

Now, because we’re super serious about our rankings, we thought it only fair to complete the set by ranking the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Much with our TMNT rankings, these rankings will be based entirely on my half-forgotten knowledge of late 90s to early 2000s television, and like with that list, we’ll be including secondary characters too.

This is every Power Ranger, ranked from worst to best.

Zordon

Saban Entertainment

Saban Entertainment

In a past life, Zordon was a galactic wizard with fearsome power that was both feared and respected across the universe. In the modern world, he is a head in a jar. Look, credit where credit is due, he did gather the Power Rangers, kicking off the events that became the television event of my childhood… but he’s still just a head in a jar.

Kimberly Ann Hart (Pink Ranger)

Saban Entertainment

Saban Entertainment

Look, Kimberly the Pink Ranger is honestly fine. Really! She’s a good addition to the team, being a level-headed (if sometimes a teensy bit vapid) leader. She’s just very one-note, and that note is not enough to elevate her to the top of the list. She was later replaced by Katherine Hillard, who was a bit better, but not by much.

Alpha

Saban Entertainment

Saban Entertainment

Alpha the robot is a good bit of comic relief, but doesn’t really do much more than that. The first couple times you see him short circuit and freak out, it’s pretty funny, but when he starts doing that every episode, or even multiple times in an episode, it gets pretty exhausting. Still, in a few rare instances, he manages to provide a surprising amount of heart to the show.

Tommy Oliver (Green Ranger)

Saban Entertainment

Saban Entertainment

LOOK. Before you get mad at me, please know that Tommy Oliver will be back later on this list. I promise. Tommy’s time as the Green Ranger was fairly long-lived, and did manage to be fairly compelling at times. Introducing him as a villain was a great idea, but after he joined the team he was just kind of… there. He gets redemption later on, both in the show and on this list, but his tenure as the Green Ranger fell off hard.

Billy Cranston (Blue Ranger)

Saban Entertainment

Saban Entertainment

As a child, I very much sympathized with Billy. He was a dork, a geek, a nerd, and so was I, which meant I liked him a lot. Looking back though, Billy was just a bit bland. He tended to have some good storylines, putting him in the thick of the action and providing a nice opportunity to connect with the other Rangers, but none of that character progression seemed to carry over into subsequent episodes. He does, however, have the Triceratops Dinozord, which is the best one.

Jason Lee Scott (Red Ranger)

Saban Entertainment

Saban Entertainment

Jason was the Leonardo of the Power Rangers, a headstrong, honorable leader who took his duties seriously. He was also one of very few Rangers to have actual character development over the series — although that would become irrelevant once Jason got the boot. As the Red Ranger, Jason led the team into countless battles, never giving up and always pushing for his teammates to be the best they can. He’s a solid leader, and every team needs a good leader.

Zack Taylor (Black Ranger)

Saban Entertainment

Saban Entertainment

Zack was a deeply cool character, if a little unfortunately saddled with some stereotypes at times. He fought using hip hop dancing, had a great deal of emotional range, and was truly the heart of the team. Whenever the rangers were down, the Black Ranger would be the one to lift them back up, and when Jason got a little too hot-headed, Zack would be the one to talk sense into him. Every team needs a sensible, fun, cool guy, and Zack was that guy.

Tommy Oliver (White Ranger)

Saban Entertainment

Saban Entertainment

See? I told you he’d be back. After kind of just existing for half a season, Tommy was depowered, eventually returning as the White Ranger. Zordon gave him this new form, and asked him to act as a beacon of hope when the Power Rangers were most in need. He also had a talking sword called Saba, which was honestly ridiculous but kind of fun in a silly way.

Trini Kwan (Yellow Ranger)

Saban Entertainment

Saban Entertainment

Trini was always the best Power Ranger. The Yellow Ranger yelling “Sabertooth Tiger!” to summon her Zord is probably my earliest memory, and it’s one that will stick with me until I ultimately perish. Trini could do just about anything — she was smart, funny, athletic, and tactical, ultimately being the most capable Ranger in the group. Trini would later be replaced by Aisha Campbell, but it just wasn’t the same.

Rita Repulsa

Saban Entertainment

Saban Entertainment

Rita is the GOAT. I don’t care that she’s evil, I don’t care that she makes babies cry, I don’t even care that she’s responsible for the pain and suffering of the main cast. She’s a damn icon and she deserves to be respected. Look at the way she dresses, listen to how she talks. I don’t know how those chest spikes didn’t get censored and frankly I don’t care. This is a woman who woke up after being trapped for 10,000 years and was like, “Yeah, you know what? I’m gonna conquer Earth, I’m over it.” Good for her.
