Every Fan Theory About the ‘Game of Thrones' Series Finale (and the One We Think Is Probably Right)
*Warning: Spoilers ahead*
With 2019 right around the corner (we can pretend, right?), we’re more than ready to start our Night’s (re)Watch of all seven seasons of Game of Thrones. To help make the time fly (like a raven with some big Jon Snow news), we’ve compiled the seven most intriguing (main character) theories about how the beloved HBO series will end.

Bran Is Actually the Night King
OK, this one is probably a little too far-fetched for us, but it does have a lot going for it. Instead of just time traveling (like any normal Three-Eyed Raven), one theory is that when Bran went back in time to stop the Children of the Forest from creating the Night King, he actually got stuck in the Night King’s body. Another indicator that Bran might be the Night King: As the White Walker army marches toward the Wall, they form a giant Direwolf head, aka the House Stark sigil. Coincidence? Maybe not.
Jon Snow Is Azor Ahai
Quick refresher: Azor Ahai is the great warrior who is prophesied to return and save all men from the Others (aka the White Walkers). And since we now know Jon Snow is actually Aegon Targaryen, son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark and rightful heir to the Iron Throne, it seems pretty possible that he could unite the Seven Kingdoms (if they ever find out the truth...help a brother out, Bran). Plus, he’s already died and come back to life…so he’s really got nothing to lose.
Or Daenerys Is
Aunt Dany also checks a bunch of the boxes for the Azor Ahai prophecy: She was reborn in fire (during that unforgettable scene in season six), amidst salt and smoke “to rewake dragons out of stone.” The prophecy is also gender-neutral, meaning it could be a woman who comes to save all men, and one witch in the books predicted the parents of the "Prince (or Princess) That Was Promised" were Dany’s parents, Prince Aerys and Princess Rhaella. Will the Mother of Dragons complete the prophecy and conquer the White Walkers?
Arya Will Disguise Herself as…
Jaime. Using the skills she’s learned in Braavos as “No One,” Arya will wear Jaime’s face to kill Cersei. Since this would technically still fulfill the Valonqar theory (more on that later...), it could work, and Arya would be able to check another name off her kill list. Another popular Arya theory we’re sorta into: When she dies (which is likely since there have been many parallels drawn between her and her Aunt Lyanna, with both being “Beautiful, and willful, and dead before her time” according to one of the books), Arya will warg into her direwolf, Nymeria, where she’ll live out the rest of her days as head of a wolf pack.
Khal Drogo Will Return
Back in season one when Dany’s “sun and stars” is left in a vegetative state by a witch, she tells Daenerys that he will return only when “the sun rises in the west and sets in the east. When the seas go dry, and the mountains blow in the wind like leaves. When your womb quickens again, and you bear a living child. Then he will return, and not before.” And we know back in season seven that Dany absolutely cannot have kids since she makes a point to let Jon and everyone else know her dragons are her only children…but then her and her nephew (it’ll never not be weird) Jon get it on in the boat. And now we’re sorta wondering if this is the sign that Drogo could return (maybe as Azor Ahai?), when Dany bears a living child (with Jon Snow). Either way, the Mother of Dragons will have some seriously tough decisions between two hunky heartthrobs (sheesh, must be nice…).
The White Walkers Will Win
We mean, we know the series finale table reading left the entire cast in tears and that it’s extremely “emotional” with many of the characters dying “one by one.” Also, George R. R. Martin has said all along that the ending to Game of Thrones would be “bittersweet,” meaning we’ll probably be scarred by what characters get killed off. One Redditor even posited that the Night King could hop on (ice) Viserion and take King’s Landing while everyone is marching north to the Wall during season eight, therefore unseating Cersei and having his army kill the other leaders of the Seven Kingdoms in one fell swoop. But, c’mon, George! That’s playing dirtier than even Cersei could imagine.
And one we think is right: Jaime Will Kill Cersei
Among the many Jaime theories (that he’s the "Prince That Was Promised," that he’ll be the one to kill the Night King), our fave is that he’s going to have to kill his twin sister/lover/mother of his children (yuck), Cersei Lannister. One of the major GoT prophecies is that Cersei will meet her maker at the hands of the Valonqar, which is High Valyrian speak for “little brother,” and fans believe this hints at Tyrion. However, the books tell us Jaime was actually born shortly after Cersei, which means he actually is a little bit younger. And judging from the season seven finale, it looks as though he’s starting to have major doubts about the sanity of ol’ Cers. Dun dun dun.
