In his patented southern drawl, Matthew McConaughey has given some stirring, memorable speeches over the course of his career – both on and off film.

From “I love those redheads!” (Dazed and Confused, 1993), to “I don’t sleep; I just dream” (True Detective, 2014), to “Don’t walk into a place like you wanna buy it, walk in like you own it” (from his autobiographical, self-help book Greenlights, 2020).

And now, he’s lent his quirky, unmistakable, motivational baritone to Griffin Colapinto.

“Hey Griff!” McConaughey says in the clip above, showing the San Clemente surfing driving around town, the community rallying in support of his World Title bid.

“I wanted to get in your ear before you get all in your head about this World Title business. I wanted to share a perspective that has helped me make a lot of my dreams come true – it’s called be less impressed and be more involved.”

Earlier this year, we reported that McConaughey was in Griff’s corner all the way back in Hawaii this season, pumping him up on the sand before a heat.

"He was there with his family and was psyching me up before my heats at one of the contests," Griff said, before clarifying, “I wouldn't say I'm close with McConaughey.”

But McConaughey’s a Griff fan; and he wants him to manifest his destiny, and beat the San Clemente transplant and reigning World Champ, Filipe Toledo.

He continued:

“When we’re just impressed, our dreams are nothing but those fairytale dust clouds that we bend our neck to see, but we never get ahold of. But when we’re involved, we grab those clouds, we grab that fairy dust; we look ‘em in the eye and we make ‘em a reality.

“This moment that you’re in right now, right here, it’s a classic yin and yang. It’s a balance of making it happen, and letting it come. The reason and the rhyme. The balance of the engineered and the mystical.

“When you need an 8.89 to decide the World Title and you surf your way to a 9…yeah, you gotta stay tuned to that music as well. It is no accident you are here right now.

“A roof is a manmade thing, Griff. And you have no lid. So, fly.”

Finals Day has been called on for Saturday, September 9th. The World Title Duke Kahanamoku WSL Champions' Trophy will be crowned. Will it be Griff?

Stay tuned.
