  • Eva Mendes’ latest Instagram sparked a parenting debate about spanking.

  • The actress, 47, shared a quote that read: “Spanking does for a child’s development what hitting a spouse does for a marriage.”

  • Followers chimed in with differing opinions, some defending, and some condemning the claim.

Eva Mendes isn’t on Instagram often, but her latest post is certainly making up for it. On April 20, while sharing her favorite red carpet look, the Hitch star slipped in her favorite parenting quote. And let’s just say, followers cared a lot more about the quote than her peach-toned Versace dress.

“I’m often asked what my favorite red carpet dress is,” she captioned the post. “This @versace is definitely up there. I’m not often asked what my favorite parenting quote is, but I’ll post it anyway. Please slide if you care. 💕”

The quote denounced spanking as a form of discipline, reading: “Spanking does for a child’s development what hitting a spouse does for a marriage.”

And the comments filled with passionate perspectives from both sides.

“Yes! I agree. Every time I was ‘disciplined’ growing up, I only felt fear and shame. IT never ‘corrected’ behavior,” influencer Dulce Candy wrote. “I would never hit my child to teach them a lesson and inflict psychological and physical pain. ❤️but that’s just me :).” Another simply commented: “🙌🙌❤️❤️ both Eva, both!! 💯”

But not everyone was so agreeable, and surprisingly enough, Mendes took the time to engage with those who felt differently. “I don’t know. I was spanked and now I’m a respectful adult. And believe me, I deserved those whoopings. I was a brat,” one person wrote.

Mendes responded: “Thank you for your comment. So happy to agree to disagree. Want this page to offer that in a loving way. We all parent our own way and I have no idea what I’m doing most the time,” adding, “This didn’t come with a manual 😩 so when there’s something that resonates with me, I pass it on. Lotsa love ❤️.”

Another naysayer claimed to “completely disagree” with the actress, adding that the “goal in raising kids is not to have to spank, but it’s correcting before they can reason behavior out with you.”

Once again, Mendes gave a level response. “Thank you for a respectful comment,” she wrote. “So nice to disagree with respect. I found the quote powerful and wanted to pass it on. Lotsa love to and yours.”

Mendes, 47, shares two daughters, Esmeralda Amada, 6, and Amada Lee, 4 with Ryan Gosling, and it’s pretty surprising that she was willing to engage in such a conversation, considering how strict she is about keeping family life off of social media. That’s why you never see photos of Gosling or the girls on her feed.

When a follower once asked her why, she said she’s “always had a clear boundary” when it comes to family, adding that she’ll “talk about them of course, with limits, but I won’t post pictures of our daily life.” She also said that she doesn’t share photos of her daughters because they’re not old enough to understand and give her consent.

But she’s definitely willing to talk about parenting.
