Ethan Suplee is best known for his roles in American History X, My Name Is Earl, Remember the Titans and the films of Kevin Smith—but the actor looks dramatically different now, after shedding more than 200 pounds and getting jacked. In a recent Instagram post, Suplee looked back on his weight loss journey, sharing a photo of himself at his heaviest contrasted with a shirtless selfie from a recent vacation in Italy.

In the caption of the image, Suplee quoted the Greek philosopher Heraclitus: "The only constant in life is change."

"I am aware of change as much as I am aware of the sun rising and setting," the actor wrote. "What shapes how we change? Is it some divine force, our environment, the chemistry within the meat sacks we use to navigate this mortal plane?"

He added: "Change is guaranteed, whether active or passive is up to me."

In a 2020 essay for Men's Health, Suplee opened up about his history with diet culture, and how he lived in a cycle of dieting, losing weight, then gaining weight again. "I now understand that early on in my life, I developed a bunch of bad habits. These habits basically broke my body’s ability to tell me when to stop eating," he wrote. "Diets told me I was defective—and yo-yo dieting is the worst sort of hell. It is chasing a goal that disappears immediately once achieved."

Now, Suplee's main goal is to be as healthy as possible—and that means being mindful in both his exercise routine (he trains for maintenance, not to show off how many plates he can lift) and his nutrition.

"The most important thing I would want anyone to take away is that for me, the biggest change was understanding how food works," he told Men's Health. "And the more I feel that I understand, scientifically, the more power I have over it."
