Watching the first proper trailer for Marvel’s Eternals movie is a wild experience in its own right. From moment one, the trailer eschews the poppy vibe that Marvel Studios has leaned into in recent years; the proclivity for fun that has made the Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy movies among its most popular series. Here, under the direction of recent Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao, we set up for something grander. Accompaniment by Skeeter Davis’ somber 1962 hit “The End of the World” only amplifies that aura. But that’s just the beginning here.
The dissonance really kicks in when the trailer treats us to close-ups of its stars. It’s striking to see Brian Tyree Henry dabbling in alien magic; dazzling to behold Salma Hayek in an otherworldly headdress. But the celebrity sighting that conjures the whoa moment to end all whoa moments? Angelina Jolie descending from an oblong spaceship. What a time to be alive.
The trailer spends the bulk of its time with Gemma Chan, who plays Sersi in the film. We follow her on her quest through the varied eras and terrains of Earth. As we know, this character looks to serve as the space-faring troop’s emotional connection to humankind. She’s got a bit of an affinity for us lesser beings.
Here’s a bit more info on the cast of characters, per Marvel’s press release:
Marvel Studios’ “Eternals” welcomes an exciting new team of Super Heroes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The epic story, spanning thousands of years, features a group of immortal heroes forced out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s oldest enemy, The Deviants. The outstanding ensemble cast includes Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Gemma Chan as humankind-loving Sersi, Kumail Nanjiani as cosmic-powered Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos, Salma Hayek as the wise and spiritual leader Ajak, Lia McHugh as the eternally young, old-soul Sprite, Don Lee as the powerful Gilgamesh, Barry Keoghan as aloof loner Druig, and Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Thena. Kit Harington plays Dane Whitman.
Eternals hits theaters on November 5.
