Erykah Badu Takes the Flower Crown to New Heights

Erykah Badu is out to prove that flower crowns are a seasonless affair. Last night’s Black Girls Rock event in New Jersey saw the performer dominating the saffron carpet in a bloom-bedecked headpiece that could have been pulled from the SS19 runways, the piece’s pink roses an ode to the flower’s second, late-summer bloom.

Rather than allowing the avant-garde topper—which featured a fair amount of greenery amid the fuchsia blossoms—Badu doubled down on the drama, an applicated of crimson lipstick offering her glowing complexion a bit of bold color. And at eye-level? A quick pull of onyx liner edged vertically under the lower lash line, a note which teamed with Badu’s septum ring to offer extra irreverence to the decidedly pretty moment. The look called to mind the exaggerated floral cues that defined the SS19 runways at Rodarte and Dolce and Gabbana. Though fall is at top of mind, why not make like Badu and mark summer’s last lap with a wash of over-the-top romantic whimsy?
