Erin Napier talks struggling to braid daughter Helen’s hair: 'I was supremely frustrated'

Home Town star Erin Napier just shared the sweetest story about braiding her daughter Helen's hair.

The HGTV star, whose sixth season of her home renovation show with husband Ben began in Dec. 2021, took to Instagram on Wednesday to share a photo of her 4-year-old's hairstyle. While Helen's French braid was far from flawless, she apparently handled her mother's feelings with plenty of grace.

Napier began her caption, "I cannot French braid. I have tried and I have tried. I watched all the YouTube videos. I can paint and I can make pottery but my hands are absolutely unable to braid my daughter's hair."

Napier said that after trying for "30 minutes" to braid Helen's hair, she was "supremely frustrated" by the results. Fortunately, Helen handled the situation very well.

"Helen asked to see a picture of it, and I showed her this," she continued. "She cringed so slightly, raised her hand to touch it, smiled big and said, 'Oh mommy you did such a good job. It's still pretty.' And my eyes watered and I told her I would take it out if she didn't like it, and she said, ‘No! I love it. It IS a French braid. You're a good mommy.'"

Helen may not have gotten the braid of her dreams, but Napier joked that she did get something good out of the hairstyling.

"And that's how you get a caramel milkshake, Helen girl," she concluded her post.

Napier, who gave birth to her second daughter, Mae, in May 2021, often shares anecdotes about her family on social media.

In November, she posted about the sweet anniversary surprise Ben set up for her in their former apartment, which included their favorite takeout and a playlist from their wedding. She gushed over her spouse in her Instagram caption, writing, "I cried for how thankful I am that God gave us each other. Tonight Ben told me, 'He knew you needed someone who understood your tender heart.' Yes. To be completely understood (for better or for worse) and found valuable anyway: that's love."
