Yesterday, Equipment held its first full ready-to-wear presentation at Constantin Brancusi’s storied sculpture studio, a subterranean oasis of sorts that’s tucked away from the bustling crowds outside the nearby Pompidou Center. It’s a fitting space for a brand founded on stealth basics. After all, Equipment’s classic button-down shirts have held sway with stylish Parisiennes for decades, gaining a loyal global following along the way, including Kate Moss. (The British supermodel is among the brand’s past collaborators.)

“There is a real gap in the market for beautiful clothes with a tailored line and city wearability at a great price point,” says Sarah Rutson, who has been busy reshaping Equipment since she joined the Collected Group, the label’s Los Angeles–based holding company, as chief brand officer last year. “Quite frankly, women don’t want to spend $5,000 on a jacket these days.”

With everything from languid floral silk dresses to transitional leather coats, the collection did more than just fill the gaps. Even the simplest pieces—collarless linen shirting and wide-leg pants, say—had a quiet, forward-thinking energy. As far as grander minimalist statements go, the windowpane-check silk suiting hit the mark and felt right at home in the artist’s airy studio. And given that nothing in the collection will retail for more than three figures, Equipment is clearly keeping affordability in the frame, too.
