Denzel Washington once again reprises the role of special agent turned good guy Robert McCall in action thriller The Equalizer 3, the third movie based on the '80s TV show. This time around, the chase scenes and brutal shootouts take place against the scenic backdrop of the Italian coast, where an injured McCall recuperates before coming to blows with local organized crime.

The movie may have only just been released, but already fans are talking about The Equalizer 4 and wondering if Washington might be up for revisiting the character in future sequels. Turns out, not so much.

"This is the end for me," Washington told ET during an appearance at CinemaCon prior to the movie's release. "It may not be the end, they may do another one, but it's the end for me."

Will there be an Equalizer 4?

Without Washington, the future of the franchise definitely looks murky—but not necessarily over. Director Antoine Fuqua has explained that he sees each movie as its own individual story, so the possibility of recasting Washington's role or introducing a new character as the Equalizer is not outside the realm of possibility.

However, if they were to make another Equalizer movie, Fuqua thinks a prequel could be an interesting way to go.

"I definitely think about it a lot," he said in a recent interview with NME. "Especially now with the new technology and AI and all that kind of stuff... Is there a story to be told about how [McCall] became this person—the younger version? I've had that conversation with Richard Wenk quite a bit... I haven’t talked to Denzel about that yet. It’s all so fresh and new. I’m still watching [the technology]. I’ve watched Harrison Ford’s film and I know there’s other movies coming out... And I’m hearing the technology is getting better and better and better. So I’m kind of watching it to see where it goes."
