EPS Vs. Poly? Shaper Glenn Pang Breaks it Down

There's a lot to think about these days when it comes to buying a board.

Single fin, thruster, or quad? How many liters? But first and foremost, EPS or poly?

Press play below for some advice on the two from legendary Oahu shaper Glenn Pang.

Hawaii's FreeSurf Magazine shared the above clip a few days ago.

FreeSurf captioned the video:

@gpangsurf dropping knowledge and working with T&C Surf team rider @koasurfklub on refining a new twin fin..."

In the clip, Pang talks about the pros and cons of EPS and poly.

He explained that the main difference between the two is that EPS is more buoyant, but that can have its drawbacks.

"Sometimes on the windier days, the EPS becomes chattery and doesn't hold as well on your turn. Because the boards are so light they don't have the momentum of PU boards. So the boards paddle faster, but once you stop paddling the board stops, because it doesn't have the weight," Pang explains in the clip.

He then explained that a poly board would have some momentum to keep moving once paddling stops.

Let's sum it up:

According to Pang, boards made from EPS foam are lighter, paddle faster, and carry less momentum.

Meanwhile, poly bards are heavier than EPS, paddle slower, and carry more momentum.

FreeSurf publisher Mike Latronic commented: "A Life long dream was realized winning an @isasurfing Masters World Title riding @gpangsurf@tcsurfboards boards! Listen up! The man knows what he’s talking about ;-) ⚡️⚡️⚡️"

Pang responded to Latronic: "thanks Mike, that was an epic trip🤙"

A stoked viewer thanked Pang: "Thank you so much for spreading your Knowledge. Double shaka for you brother.🤙🏾🤙🏾🙏🏾🇵🇷🏄🏽"
